seabiscuit Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 Hi everyone. I'm after a few undercar photo's of the following models for comparison. Specifically around the diff area. If you've got pics of it up on a hoist, that would be awesome! KE30- 2-door sedan KE30- 4-door sedan KE55- 4-door sedan Cheers, Seabiscuit. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 Only things you'll really notice from the pics are: Diffs - Borgy or banjo And weather it has a rear sway bar or not. Everything else will just look the same. :y: Quote
TWF#14 Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 what if he wants to see what kinda shockies hes got or how many leafs they have? Quote
sammo[RL] Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 KE30- 4-door sedan I'll let you crawl under mine.....for a price! :y: Quote
seabiscuit Posted December 15, 2009 Author Report Posted December 15, 2009 Thanks for the response guys. I am trying to compare floor pans with the KE30 2-door and 4-door against each other. If they were the same, I want to compare a KE30 2-door against a KE55 sedan. But WHY I want to compare them is because I thought the KE55 might have a different suspension setup than the crappy leaf-only suspension in KE30's. The reason behind it all is because I want to upgrade a KE30 2-door suspension in the rear end. I tried to kill 2 birds with 1 stone, but I should have asked the question "Do KE55 Sedan's have the same suspension as a KE30 or is it better?" before wanting to compare the floor pan. Onto my next question: What mods has anyone seen/done to a KE30 rear-end without spending crazy dollars or cutting out 90% of the floor. I basically want to convert it from leaf to something similar to KE70 or better. Quote
TheNOBBLER[RL] Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 Thats going to be crazy coin... You would be better off going an aftermarket 4 bar setup rather than trying to make a later model corolla or similar setup work in your car. Even going to a later jap irs will be a nightmare. I would ask the question of why you want to get rid of the so called crappy leafs in the rear? In a car such as a Corolla you can make them work quite well for anything you could ever throw at it on the street and most things you can point the car into on the track. Simple things like making sure all of your bushes are in good condition will be a big step in the right direction if they are shot, having an extra leaf added and the springs reset and re tempered to suit your car would be a good way to go also (and for about the cost of an aftermarket set of coil springs). A rear sway bar (to match a front one) and if your getting really serious a set of caltrack type bars to stop diff wind up and possibly a panhard bar or watts linkage to take some of the strain off the springs around corners (in that it will locate the diff rather than the springs locating it AND working as springs). If you get a chance (and I'm not sure if they have events of the like in your area) head to a local 2litre sports sedan race or similar at a race day, I know of a few corollas running around melbourns racetracks that still use the leafs and do so very well.. They will be a wealth of knowledge if you approach them the right way and it will end up saving you many dollars and headaches trying to sort out a different rear end when its not really needed. End Rant :y: JP Quote
seabiscuit Posted December 15, 2009 Author Report Posted December 15, 2009 The plans for the car in question is 4A-GE. Do you think the standard diff will be up to the task of "spirited" off track use? To put it simply: I am looking at upgrading the diff because I will be running more power, but upgrading from a leaf setup while I am at it - IF POSSIBLE. Would there be a way to get a different, stronger leaf suspension diff that will closely "bolt in" to the KE30 floor pan? Thats going to be crazy coin... Thank you for your input, TheNOBBLER! :y: You can get the mounts cut off your current diff and welded on to a T series diff, minimal cost, and makes for a direct replacement for the original diff, gives you the option of running an LSD center, and most importantly is stronger..... There really is no need to try and engineer a new rear end suspension setup, the leaves will do you fine, get the professionals at any reputable suspension shop to add a leaf to your current packs and reset an inch or two lower, add to this a decent (read: not cheap) set of shocks and you'll be laughing...... tojo2 Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 Just read an article in a old magazine on a TTE te37 rally corolla. Had similar leafsprung rearend to the ke3x to begin with. Here`s how they moded the rear suspention: kept the leaves. Made paralell , equal length 24" 4link rods . bilstein shocks all around , moved rear shocks to outboard turrets angeled to point at rear tyre contact patch. Apperantly this sorted the axle tramp and it handeled very well Engine was a schnitzer 16 valve 2tg built for TTE 175hp so stronger than most 4ages and the lsd diff came from a ta22 gt. Ta22 diffs are simular in with to the ke3xs so should be a good starting point. Quote
