4age in ae 71. has been going good decided to replace inlet gaskets. now it wont idle. its sits between 1500 and 2000 RPM. as though the throttle is stuck on but it isnt. have checked everything have bought new gaskets to replace the ones ive just put in. have zip tied the ''powerband'' throttles shut as process of elimination. Have noticed fifth injector is wired but has always been that way is i got the car..

Any suggestions??

its a 16v with higher comp haltech ecu O2 censor never been wired. temp controlled throttle setup thing blocked trying to provide as much info to make it easier to diagnose

idle up = air going into engine.

i think you may have a leak, and since you were playing with the intake gaskets i think you may have created a leak...

why did you change the intake gaskets?

by powerband throttles are you refering to the TVIS? (butterflies between the head and the manifold) don't worry about them, they don't let in more air, they just allow more air to flow. they just restrict the flow at low revs.

a way to check where your leak is, is to get some sort of nasty propelant ("start ya bastard" or anything that is likely to explode, i reckon deodorant would work too) and spray it around your intake manifold when your engine is going. if some of it gets in it will change the idle of your engine. you will notice something anyway.

yes was referring to the TVIS. ok just heading over to the shed now so will have a tinker and see what happens.

Thanks.

the reason i had it off was to get it cleaned and get the internals smooth coated

ok have done the leak test with start ya bastard with little or no change. also double checked the cooling system for air. still no change.

KE70dave when you say spray around the manifold are meaning just where the gaskets are or the whole thing.

this may sound stupid but just inside the throttle body there is two holes one larger one smaller. i put my finger over the smaller hole and it made the revs drop back a little. is that hole part of the water controlled unit that is under the throttle body?? i have blocked off this part but is there something i didnt know to do?

Yes. When i had the seca i pulled that part off and cut up a coke can and used a square of that and some gasket goo and covered the hole over. Don't just pull the hoses off. You've got to also block off the air holes in the unit as well.

Its one spot that needs to be done after a coolant change or it runs low if it hasn't been blocked off...

If the idle is running uneven - up down up down up down. It'd be a good chance thats where the problem lies.

Electrical connections ? Disconnected throttle position sensor is one to look at - i did it once.

Have you run a diagnostics to see what the, if any, trouble codes pop up ?

That fifth injector is the cold start injector

Even though you've said the cooling system has been bled, it still sounds exactly like an air-bubble, as 2000rpm is the cold-idle speed for a 4AGE. Quickest way to rule it out is to take the intake piping off the front of the throttle body and block off the cold-idle bypass valve hole (it's the big one just before the throttle body) - if it drops, then there is an air-bubble or the wax-pellet cold idle valve is screwed.

i can't run diagnostics simply because I'm a country bumpkin and the closest haltech dealer is in lithgow (4 hrs away). decided to swallow my pride and open the wallet and get the performsnce shop to do the gaskets and a few other things for me then il be making a day trip to lithgow (hopefully)

TPS - throttle position sensor

you need to reset this, start off with it turned fully anti clockwise and set your idle and throttle stop screw THEN set your TPX by putting a 20 thou feeler gauge in between the throttle stop screw and the part it comes down on, it should come out of idle mode and into throttle mode when you put the gauge in there and when you take it out it should return to idle

hope this helps

yeah but he is running a haltech, not a standard computer.

resetting the TPS is a little more complex than that with an aftermarket ecu.

Well its actually easier, but requires a laptop.

you really need to get inside that haltech ecu and see what it is doing, you will know for certain what is making your engine idle up. and if the only option you have is to get this performance shop to do it , then i guess thats what your gonna have to do.

there isnt much we can help you with as we don't know what enrichment maps are running and what the settings are. and by the sounds of it neither do you.

if you can get your laptop onto that haltech that woudl be the way to go.

ok have taken it to the workshop quote "" its seems as though the throttle plate is stuck but i'll have to do further testing to make sure it is. that may cost alot to do"""

he said that after working on it for 2 hours but fixxing nothing and charging me $180
