Corolla_Kid Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 right i have a ke20 rolla and ive swapped the original moter and tranny for a 5 k and 5 speed manual from a ke70 rolla and I'm not getting any economy on the highway. 3500 rpm at 100 ks an hour so i was just wondering what diff ratios were offered from the factory and if anyone knows of any for sale or anything else that could be suitable Quote
demuire Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 Umm, most common ratio is a 4.1. 4.3 are available with a bit of looking around. I think there are also 3.9's and 4.5's, but both are quite rare. Quote
Corolla_Kid Posted June 23, 2005 Author Report Posted June 23, 2005 yeah i was looking more for something around 3.5:1 does anyone know any other ways around the problem Quote
Redwarf Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 (edited) As far as I know te best you will get is a 3.9 out of a KE50 import. Rocking horse poo if you can get it. What's in it at the moment? Belive it or mot, going from 4.3 to 4.1 makes a fair bit of difference, the only thing is, you'll still be doing 3500 rpm at an indicated 100 because you've changed the final drive. The trick is knowing where 100 actually is. Â Or you could put on bigger tyres. Edited June 23, 2005 by Redwarf Quote
mikeys toy[RL] Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 (edited) i had this problem with daisy....she came with 4.44's stock, i put in 4.22's, then put in a starlet kp61 diff and got 3.20's no american starlet had an lsd, or 2.XX ratio. but they are really weak. i went through about 4 of them doing tire burnouts until they popped. i finally switched up to a te28 rear with 4.10's and just swapped to 3.58's 2 days ago. i couldn't be happier Edited June 23, 2005 by mikeys toy Quote
Super Jamie Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 3500, man you're lucky, mine sat at 4000+ there's no 3.5 corolla diff, and your car would be really slow off the mark if you put one in, it would suck. i think there's a 3.7 rx7 diff  oh, you could look at imported starlet diffs, they came in some stupid ratio like 2.7. you'd need to get an axle code and cross reference it with the wiki (or faq, or matti's page) Quote
coln72 Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 I'd be checking your speedi accuracy. 3500 seems high in 5th. Â Or do some calculations as to how many revs you should be pulling at 100km/h. Need to check up on how to but it is not that hard Quote
Super Jamie Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 no, it's right. these cars are geared pretty high from factory, he's probably got 4.222 or something in there now Quote
Medicine_Man Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 my KE70 with a 4.1 sits on about 3750RPM @ 110km/hr on the highway i thnk.. Quote
Felix Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 LOL, my 5k does 4200 in 5th at 100km/h. has 185/60r13 tyres and a 4.55:1 diff. Â fuel consumption was fine when i was living on the mountain, and doing alot of 60km/h work. now living out in the country i find it is not so good, extended cruising at over 4500 rpm uses the juice, although i'm still getting around 11km/L. acceleration is good for passing... Â thinking of going back to a 4.22 with the 5k. Quote
coln72 Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 can't remember my KE35 being up so high with 4.3 gears. Something around the low threes was around the mark with 225/60/13 tyres in 5th gear Quote
ikon_idol Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 Hi I have a 3.7 (from a ke20 type housing) that I swap in and out of my race car so they were made. It was hard to find and I'm now looking for a 3.9 which would be the ideal ratio for my car and present engine. Mostly I use the 4.3 as it suits short tracks and hill climbs. Quote
Corolla_Kid Posted June 24, 2005 Author Report Posted June 24, 2005 yeah thanks for the info I'm pretty sure i was doing around 100 ks as i was keeping with the traffic at a 100 km an hour road yeah a 3.9 would be very good does anyone know the location of one? Quote
mikeys toy[RL] Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 the 82 TE72 had a 3.58, i now do 80 MPH @ 3,800....so i am happy....no power up hills, especially with the a/c on, but i have already noticed a 2mpg increase in milage the te38 i just found has 3.75's in it...... Quote
