Chief Posted October 27, 2009 Author Report Posted October 27, 2009 Did you use the search function first!!?? no sorry i didnt know what to search for i don't know what the name was i was looking at some peoples cars but none of them had how the fly wheel was lightened Quote
orangeLJ Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 you can get it machined to be lighter, BUT removing metal is always going to weaken the part, and when its a flywheel, thats not always a good thing. In a RWD application, the flywheel is right next to your feet, not a good thing if it lets go (Ive seen it happen, trust me, its not pretty) If it was me (and I know others wouldnt have this attitude) Id buy a performance explosion proof flywheel. lighter then you will get a std flywheel and safer for your walking future. Chief Posted October 27, 2009 Author Report Posted October 27, 2009 i edited the first post to get semi flamed proof haha Quote
Chief Posted October 27, 2009 Author Report Posted October 27, 2009 what happens when they let go they wouldnt get through the bellhousing and then through the floor would they? and how often would this happen? Quote
rob83ke70 Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 get somebody who knows what they are doing to lighten it, and balance it as well. I'd reccommend robinson toolmakers in kelso (bathurst) nsw. And as far as I'm concerned it is totally worth it! Robert. Quote
Felix Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 (edited) A lightened flywheel may spin up faster, but then again it loses revs quicker when you hit a hill. No point in even bothering about it until you have a pretty healthy motor. My motor will happily rev to over 8500, I'd feel uncomfortable taking a couple of kilos out of a cast iron flywheel. I've had a pressure plate self destruct before. Edited October 27, 2009 by Felix Quote
rob83ke70 Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 healthy engine is a good part of it, flywheel makes a HUGE difference though. And we can put up with a loss of momentum when driving up hills. Everything in a car is a trade-off and you learn to live with it after a while. We run a 4.3:1 diff with a 4speed manual transmission and 195/60r14 tyres, sits at 4000rpm or so on the highway, and it has a rather loud exhaust... Robert. Quote
Sam_Q Posted November 3, 2009 Report Posted November 3, 2009 you could just save yourself a lot of haslte and use a blacktop flywheel if you can find one Quote
