Hey all,

I live in Adelaide and am considering a purchase from Victoria. What I need to know is.............

when you guys have to have your yearly roadworthy check............. do they check that the engine number still matches the number on the registered paperwork for the vehicle? The reason for this is that once a vehicle gets to Adelaide they do a numbers check before they will register it here. That means they check such things and if something doesn't match like that then you get kncoked back for transfer of rego and you have to then take the car through a full roadworthy inspection. One of the many joys of living in Adelaide is that so far we don't have such full inspections and I don't want to have to go through one.

So in short:

For your yearly roadworthy..... do they check the engine number hasn't changed?

Cheers peeps.

We don't have yearly inspections in vic either.

When you sell a car the new owner has to have a road worthy in their hand to transfer the car into their name.

Thats the only time that it would get checked.

So there are no guarantees the car has been looked at in the last few years by vicroads.

What is the engine change?

if you wish to register a car in Vic, at most Vicroads they will pop the bonnet and check the engine number and body/chassis number before rego-ing.

If it has been previously registered with that motor, you're ok. If it hasn't been, but it's the same type of motor, ie 3k-> 3k, then you need only to provide a purchase receipt for the motor, or proof that you already owned the motor.

If it is not the same type of motor ie 3k ->4age, then you will require an engineers certificate stating that the job has been done satisfactorily, as well as a RWC.

If the current owner provides a RWC when selling, you still have to present the car to Vicroads where they will check the numbers.

Hope this helps

You will need to make absolutely sure, that the engine number in the car matches the engine number on the current registration documents. Quite likely the engine has been changed and Vicroads never advised.

Otherwise you will run into problems in SA.

If not, at an absolute minimum, you would need a receipt for the engine. And this is risky as anyone can write anything, you have no guarantee the motor wasn't stolen or whatever. Unlikely, but you never know.
