Raven Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Does anyone know if its legal or not to shorten rear bump stops to increase suspension travel on a lowered vehicle? Quote
coln72 Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Dunno about how legal but my old KE35 went through at least two RWC after I sold it with cut down bump stops. Quote
Raven Posted October 18, 2009 Author Report Posted October 18, 2009 I'm getting issues with reset leaf springs in the KE36 and HUGE bump stops that I think are overkill. The previous owner removed the helper spring which is probably why I'm having issues. Quote
Sam_Q Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 the engineer I saw had no issue with it (victoria) Quote
TE278U Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 i would say as long as no part of the diff hits any part of the body once you've cut the bump stops you should be right. i believe that is all theyre there for, but it may be different in Badelaide. Quote
philbey Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 Yeh as long as you've still got the total overall clearance. This is what the DTEI have to say, this bulletin went out this month. Rubber or other resilient bump stops must be provided where the suspension and/or axle are likely to bottom out or result in the spring being coil bound (i.e. no clearance between coils at full bump.) To me this just says that you need to have bump stops, and they need to be such that they prevent any hard interface. No mention of the minimum height or the legality of moving them, it purely states they are needed and the purpose they serve. I'd go ahead and modify based on that. Legally it seems to be fine. Read This Also tells you about determining your minimum heights, the appropriate use of Lowering Blocks (yep - legal!) AND that you can run any wheel/tyre combo as long as it's within 15mm of design sizes! Mad! Quote
doityourself Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 I always thought it was illegal to remove or modify the bump stops Quote
SLO-030 Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 I reckon it doesnt make a diffrence. As long as your within your bump stop clearance limits and no part of the suspension or drive line makes contact with the floorpan at full compression, there shouldnt be an issue. When i bought my KE30 the previous owner flipped the leaves in the rear and had to remove the bump stops. Needless to say i had some wicked imprints in the rails from the top of the u bolts. Quote
philbey Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Like it says on the DTEI bulletin, (as of October 2009), you need to provide bump stops that prevent bottoming out when you modify the suspension. Quote
styler Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 i think modifying them by cutting them down is a grey area but replacing them with a shorter one is fine, most are two hole which can be easily drilled out to fit your hole spacing. a trip to the wreckers would have it sorted... Quote
anastasios Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 I doubt it would be the bumpstops that the police would be worried about, the will just say its defected for being too low, fix it. Quote
kangaroosa Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 Mine went through engineering with cut down bumpstops. I did do it nicely though and reshaped them so they looked like a factory item. As mentioned above, i got knocked back for being too low in the rear rather than the bumpstops...... Quote
oh what a nissan feeling! Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 In Qld the legal anount is 1/3rd, who knows how big they were to start with though! Quote
coln72 Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 Did the same as Kangaroosa. Cut then with a hacksaw and then made them look standard shape with a grinder :D Quote
