Rolliac Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 My daily driver has a welded diff. did it myself about 3-4 months ago. My opinion: Horrible for daily driving. It sucks bad in car parks. I feel bad for the poor axles and expect them to snap any time. It is defiantly fun for ripping skids and getting sideways though. Quote
h1_roll4 Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 tis also illegal. And its not always unsafe. At least you know for sure that both wheels will spin. It wont go open all of a sudden Quote
poodle Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 just weld it...there fun to have and i think with a locked diff you have more control if you are planning on doing the odd skid... if you don't like it you can always go back to a open diff Quote
styler Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 pros: cheap effective cons: not a proper mechanical solution dangerous in wet illegal Quote
altezzaclub Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Great on gravel but I'd never do it on tar. Promotes understeer as it drives the car straight ahead until you can get it turning, then it promotes oversteer as the rear tyres argue over how much traction each has. Without a lot of grunt to make it slide there will be more understeer than oversteer, except in the rain when it will be a real eye-opener! Use cheap tyres, they won't last! Quote
philbey Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 (edited) Second that motion. There is no way that a locker is "safe" especially next to an open or an LSD. It's either all understeer or all oversteer baby. And that chirp chirp chirp chirp as you turn in a carpark is a dead giveaway to the 5-0. Edited October 18, 2009 by philbey Quote
chappo12 Posted October 18, 2009 Author Report Posted October 18, 2009 ok well would it last long then the stock diff open? Quote
chappo12 Posted October 18, 2009 Author Report Posted October 18, 2009 I'm not gonna drive the car in the wet lol and try to stay away from car parks. Quote
ke30dude Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 If you don't have the money to upgrade the diff why not leave it stock and drive sensibly? Welding it is only going to stress the axles and when you start breaking stuff it is going to cost you anyway. Quote
philbey Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 It'll understeer like a bitch in the Dry. Quote
coln72 Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Never broke an axle with a locked diff and the understeer can be mostly dialed out by playing with the front end and driving style, but it is ILLEGAL and if you take someone out you will be in deep shit. Basically I would never use one on the road. Quote
chappo12 Posted October 18, 2009 Author Report Posted October 18, 2009 yea thats a good point what if i kill some one i would be f@$ked Quote
