TRD ke70 Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 I thought i'd start this after talking to Teddy about his engine he's building. i found this out the hard way in my starlet, running a 5k, it would Accelerate really hard and the last thing i expected when i went to freshen the engine up, was to find number one big end almost run. soon as i saw this i knew what had caused it, it was running just a standard sump, with so much acceleration the oil was been thrown to the back of the sump, staving the engine of oil. Now i'm wondering how many people out there have the same thing happening and don't know it, my oil light NEVER came on(remenber the oil switch is only 10psi). a little food for thought. Quote
kangaroosa Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 (edited) I'm running a hot 5K with a standard 5K sump. The engine is coming out in a month or two (its only 8 months old) to have it honed and new rings put in it. So i will tell u then, what sort of state the bearings are in. However, i have an aftermarket Speco Oil Pressure gauge and have noticed under full acceleration that it flickers from 70psi right down to 0psi. This only happens under full power and whilst moving at around 60km/h and over. I wasnt sure if this was just a glitch with the sensor, or if the gauge was actualling telling the truth. Maybe i'll have to look into that. BTW- The gauge is the Electrical sensor type, and Speco brand. Its only 3 months old and has been giving these readings since day1. Before this gauge, i had a cheap mechanical sensor type gauge, and it never gave low psi readings under full power. The last thing i need, is to pay for a full engine reco again. sob Edited June 12, 2005 by kangaroosa Quote
1G-GTE KE70 Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 my oil gauge beeps really really loud when it gets no pressure. it's a good way of telling when i'm low on oil haha. go round a big or sharp corner and it will beep. Quote
Dave SX' Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 mmm this is seriously something to think about... i think ill have to be investing in an oil pressure guage! Quote
wyldephyre Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 Damn, and here I thought we would talking about asking a lump of metal some really confusing questions. Quote
Ruts Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 Damn, and here I thought we would talking about asking a lump of metal some really confusing questions. I'm with wyldephyre - lets put the sump to the test Q. Which way did the oil go ? Quote
TRD ke70 Posted June 12, 2005 Author Report Posted June 12, 2005 this sounds like a serious problem, any loss in oil pressure under load is never a good thing. your oil pressure should stay resonably Consistent, but you'll find it'll drop down a little at idle. really the only way to know is through the use of a pressure Gauge that is Sensitive enought to pick up the smallest of pressure drops. pressure drops the most under hard acceleration, 1-2 gear is usally where you'll notice it, that's when you have max weight tranfer, and also hi speed cornering shows it up. i hope this saves someones engine. Ruts Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 So what sort of baffles are we talking - and what placement - wont the baffles impede the oil pick-up as well ?? Not that I am terribly concerned - you guys keep using a word I am not very familiar with "Acceleration" Quote
TRD ke70 Posted June 12, 2005 Author Report Posted June 12, 2005 (edited) check this out and you might get more of an idea of what i'm talking about. baffled sump sump Edited June 12, 2005 by TRD ke70 Quote
TRD ke70 Posted June 12, 2005 Author Report Posted June 12, 2005 there is a small advantage if you can be bothered. we don't in this engine, but have in others. Quote
Xany Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 hmmmmm, my oil pressure gauge is an autoguage one.....made by autometer apparently. so i'm guessing its pretty good... at idle the oil pressure will be at around 20-30 psi......at full song it doesnt go past 60psi....on warmup its around 70psi under load. just a quick question to kanga.....what grade oil were you running in the 5K? Quote
Mr Revhead[RL] Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 i like having transveres mounted engine. also the 4ages have a not to bad baffle as stock. Quote
kangaroosa Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 just a quick question to kanga.....what grade oil were you running in the 5K? I've run every sort of oil. My 5K basically used oil from day 1 (don't ask). I Started off with 20-50. Then went thinner on a reccomendation from the local auto parts shop. Then the engine builder said NO!!! - go thicker. So i went straight 50 blend. Same problem. I ran out of straight 50 blend, and it uses a 0.75L/week so i just top it up with 20-50. The engine is coming out soon anyway. The brands i used were Pennzoil and Penrite. Is there anyone that actually has a baffled sump, or know of someone who makes them. I'd even settle for someone that can do something with a standard sump. Quote
Xany Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 hmmm.....ok.... mine has used oil from day one as well.....however thats to do with the head....i'm going to ask......why has it used so much oil for a newly built engine? so 50 blend is the thickest you've gone?.... i'm currently running pennzoil older engine in mine which i THINK is 60. hasnt been drinking as much lately....that will all be fixed soon. btw i've only ever had problems with my oil when the oil light came on and it was too low....shes all good though. TRD ke70 Posted June 12, 2005 Author Report Posted June 12, 2005 your oil problem!! what oil did you use to run the engine in?? and how did you run the engine in??? we've got a baffled sump in the rally car, there not that hard to make. mmmm, maybe i should start to make some??? Quote
