Hi everyone.

I have a 5k in my KE70 and I've broken two starter motors in the last 4 or 5 months - however long I've had the 5k in!

It seems that the one that most recently broke down was due to the solenoid. It was an NRMA replacement item, so I

wouldn't have expected it to break! (It wasn't brand new, but was on a guess less than 70,000k's fresh and was in good

working order).

1. What possible causes could there be to the starter motor's breaking?

2. Is it just a common thing for starter motor's to break on K motors?

3. Best/cheapest options to fix! - brand newie (cost?), 2nd handy from wreckers (cost?), recondition?

4. Any experiences people have had.

5. Motor could be fairly high compression (I have no idea) - could this break the starter?

When you say break, you mean just straight out no more worky?

Most of the time I would have thought it's the solenoid, the motor itself should be pretty robust.

An exchange rebuilt starter should only set you back 100-150 bucks, just spend the money first time.

As for NRMA replacing it with a used one, that's crazy! As for your guess on 70000k you could be out by a factor of 2 or 3 and never really know.

The NRMA starter motor came off my 4k... It was put on brand new on that, but not since I owned the car so I have no idea how long it would have been

on the 4k! I'm certain the solenoid was the problem on it. What would be the cause of it breaking, though? In the tech area it says that they heat up quite

badly because of the exhaust! I tried swapping the solenoid with another one, but the stupid designer bolted it down with phillips head screws that are too

tight to undo. :worship:

Use a reduction gear starter if you can find one. They`re stronger. Look like this

Where can I get them? Did anything have them stock that will bolt up to replace mine (so I can grab one from wreckers)

Need something for a quick fix too cos I have work :worship:

You probably don't need a reduction gear starter, i have 11.5:1 static comp and it turns over fine with a stocky.

The reason your starters are dying is because they are old and clapped out.

Pay the money for a fully reco'd exchange one, it'll be half as much as the reduction starter.

And fit the heat shield (i'm pretty sure the later ones had them?)

Have taken one off my wagon for now, which has a heat shielded starter. If it breaks I'll go the distance and buy a

brand newie or if one comes up for cheap enough a gear reduction starter!

Reduction gear starters are the greatest things ever!

Best $200 I ever spent when I did my new engine. I would highly recommend replacing the one you have now with a reduction gear item :no2:
