Victim Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Yo all. Building me up a straight ghetto AE71 for 90% daily work, 10% possible drifting practice. So in this case, i have a few questions in regards to surge tanks. - Does the AE71 standard fuel tank have no baffling as standard, designating the need for an external fuel pump + surge tank setup? - If i was to place the surge tank in the boot, is it ill-advised to have my battery relocated to the boot as well? A hypothetical situation i was thinking was spark from battery into enclosed space of boot + petrol vapour = bang. - If that is not / should not be a problem, are there legality concerns in regards to the above setup on the street? Would this then make the car unroadworthy? (I am in NSW). Thankyou kindly... - Alex. Quote
BReNt Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 I'm not sure of the legalities or anything but have you thought about putting the Surge tank underneath the car to avoid having the battery and the surge tank both in the boot? This would make your boot much neater and more usable as well. Quote

Generally all remote-mounted batteries have to be in sealed containers with a vent to the outside of the car, so the possibility of fuel vapour and sparks combining is next to none. Surge tanks etc too can't be mounted in the passenger space (not a problem with the AE71 as it's not a liftback etc) but I'd also be running vent lines etc. Thing to remember, pre-KE70 Corollas had the entire fuel tank IN the boot, with just a sheet of fibreboard separating (not sealing) it from the normal boot space. LukeAE71 Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 If using standard AE71 tank then yes you will need a surge tank. You can however modify a japanese AE86 tank to fit and this will not only have the baffles but also the in tank pump for EFI :P Quote
Jesseb369 Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 where would u find a JDM ae86 tank though :/ Quote
LukeAE71 Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 Some importers bring in whole cars to wreck.... In Adelaide we have Buddyparts, he is a trader on AE86DC and I have seen a car where he has put an 86 tank into it quite successfully. It might be worth the postage to have a boot that is clean and neat. Also lift pumps suck camel dick :P Quote
silverra23 Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 Buy a marine battery holder, vent it to the outside, job done. Quote
