baggus Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 (edited) just brought me a ke70 recently and prety keen to drop a 12a in it, factory re in w.a has built a few rx ke70s, but I'm not keen on foking out shit loads of cash as I'm a apprentice and money doesnt grow on trees and i have acses to a mates work shop to do most of the work my self, but I'm after some advice from people who have ke70s with rotarys in it, realy want to know all the problems you came across during the conversion and a rough idea on the fabrication cost as far as I'm aware i will need to grab these parts from a 1st gen rx7: *12a engine (plus all the parts on it, alternator etc..) plus mounts *gearbox, clutch and slave cylinder plus mounts *radiator *oil cooler *drive shaft *hydralic pedal box out of a ae71? kiahn Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 just throwing this out there, not sure but you may want an r31 or a stronger toyota diff, unless its only going to be driven like a charade Quote
Teddy Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 if its driven like a charade it'll want a 9" haha :bash: Quote
baggus Posted August 24, 2009 Author Report Posted August 24, 2009 Yeah diff is last on the list it will be a hilux diff cheers any ways. Quote
kiahn Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 if its driven like a charade it'll want a 9" haha :bash: haha so true hilux diff is top choice man, looks like youve done your research should be quite alright with the build besides, half the fun is finding out the problems yourself :) btw, i don't know if you will have same struggle but my pedal box was a BITCH to get out without taking out the steering column ended up just saying F-this and yanking it out :y: oh btw make sure you don't accidently cut any wires, its a bitch if you have to "heal" the wires while your upside down Quote
baggus Posted August 24, 2009 Author Report Posted August 24, 2009 Yup the pedal box was a bitch as I just converted it to Manual weekend just gone that was the hardest part swaping boxes was a easy job compared to ripping the whole dash out. Is there any one on Here with a rx ke70 lol? Quote
kangaroosa Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 just brought me a ke70 recently and prety keen to drop a 12a in it, factory re in w.a has built a few rx ke70s, but I'm not keen on foking out shit loads of cash as I'm a apprentice and money doesnt grow on trees and i have acses to a mates work shop to do most of the work my self, but I'm after some advice from people who have ke70s with rotarys in it, realy want to know all the problems you came across during the conversion and a rough idea on the fabrication cost as far as I'm aware i will need to grab these parts from a 1st gen rx7: *12a engine (plus all the parts on it, alternator etc..) plus mounts A custom front mounting plate will need to be fabricated. If you can get a S2 or S3 12a with Electronic Ignition (or just source a distributor) it would be preferable. If the car is to be engineered, make sure you get an air pump as well. *gearbox, clutch and slave cylinder plus mounts Would be easier to make a new mount than adapt the RX7 one to suit. Most people advise on tossing the stock flywheel and going aftermarket due to some movies of flywheel explosions. I have an Xtreme Clutches setup. *radiator You may have to relocate/spin the bottom outlet so the kink faces a different direction so it clears the engine mount plate. *oil cooler I found the S1 Cooler to be too big for a KE30. It just physically wouldnt fit anywhere practical. I use a PWR one mounted infront of the radiator but lower. Or you could use a S3 oil cooler which mounts to the block where the oil filter is. *drive shaft Custom tailshaft will be needed to suit the flange on your diff and the different length. *hydralic pedal box out of a ae71? I modified my manual pedal box to move a push rod which goes through the fire wall into master. Search on here for KE30 Hydraulic clutch. Diff upgrade may be on the list of things to do before you spend money having to make a second tailshaft to suit. I didnt want to be replacing gearboxes every month so I have a S5 Turbo gearbox. Much chunkier than the little S1 gearboxes...hence i had my tunnel stretched and a releif made for the clutch fork. Custom extractors or even get the S1 extractors modified to suit. Theres little things like sensors and gauges for the speedo etc that will add $$ Price Estimate: -Custom mounts made and the engine and gearbox fitted -Custom Extractors and full Mandrel bent exhaust -Custom Tailshaft -Trans Tunnel Stretched and Clutch Fork relief in firewall All that cost me just under $3000 The project as a whole to date would have set me back $15,000 Quote
baggus Posted August 25, 2009 Author Report Posted August 25, 2009 Kangaroosa u are A legend thanks heaps now I have fair idea of what it is gana cost me mite have to delay it a year or two lol cheers man Quote
kangaroosa Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 (edited) Kangaroosa u are A legend thanks heaps now I have fair idea of what it is gana cost me mite have to delay it a year or two lol cheers man Thats a cheap price btw. I waited around for months on end with no progress as i couldnt find a workshop to do the work for a reasonable price. I had quotes of up to $10,000 to do the same work as what i paid $3000 for. If the $15,000 scared you off, it wont have to cost that much if you are on a budget. I went all out on new suspension, brakes, diff, paint, interior, gauges etc. Infact the $15,000 figure is very light. I would hate to add up all the money that i have thrown at the car. baggus Posted August 25, 2009 Author Report Posted August 25, 2009 I'm not to fussed about the price it's going to be a slow build any ways so it will happen it bits and pieces, I've got a mate who's a qualified mechanic and a boilermaker who has his own workshop and I'm prety sure he will help me out as he does a lot of custom work.
