insydney Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 gear changes in my 91 Corolla AE95 AWD 5spd manual are difficult without assoociated crunching, this happens in most of the gears except 4-5. i've only had this car for a few wks and guess the synchro must be stuffed? is there any oil that may help smooth out the gearchanges? the owners h'book doesnt help at all giving no indication about what oil to use... so help pls Quote

First of all learn to double clutch and heel toe while doing so. Second of all a thinner oil will help heaps. Cheapest option is some auto transmission fluid, otherwise you can go for some redline shock proof but it costs a bomb. The auto transmission fluid is thinner then the normal gearbag oil so it may not protect the gear set as well but if it is on its way out, it is on its way out. Perhaps try some atf, if it fixes your problem then shell out for the redline. I am running atf in mine, much nicer through the gears. Edited August 30, 2009 by akpv Quote

Penrite make a synthic gearbox oil which is really good, It could be your clutch on it's way out too, or maybe just needs adjusting. Quote
rob83ke70 Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 which gears are crunchy? heres a little trick. Change the gear oil first. now drive along at a pretty high speed (80km/hr or faster) and put it into neutral, foot off clutch, and push the gear lever as if your were going into the crunchy gear. It won't go into the gear, but put pressure on it for maybe 10 seconds. Then let go, put your foot on the clutch and change into an appropriate gear, speed up, and repeat process a few times. Maybe do that three times and then let it run for a while to cool the oil back down. Repeat for each crunchy gear. See if it improves.... you might be surprised. When you've done this in all the crunchy gears, probably an idea to change the oil again. Synthetic oils are apparently good, but I've always just been happily using vmx-m 75w85 in transaxles. rob83ke70 Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 this is assuming your clutch is working correctly too!! Robert. Quote
Instigator Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 What's does that accomplish Rob? Stripping the synchros further? Changing the gearbox is the best option if you plan to drive the car a lot. But be prepared to be anally raped with no lubricant if you pay someone to do it. Toyota quotes 12 hours for a clutch change. I converted mine to 20v after the original motor had no comp on the 3rd cylinder (420k kms and it was still driving fine just down on power) and my box has been fine. Probably cheaper/easier to find a whole car than it would be to source a box. Quote
rob83ke70 Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 same sort of effect as removing the gearbox, disassembling, and lapping the synchros in... when it crunches the problem is that the brass synchro is not gripping on the cone of the gear, thus not synchronising the speed of the gear when it is selected and crunching.. I've done this on two vehicles so far and avoided having to remove a gearbox for a relatively minor problem (one gear crunching) obviously if your bearings are gone, or if something else is a problem then removal and repair is more appropriate. toy-ae92 Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 i also have an ae95 4wd yeah i've had the same problem and also had problems gearing down esp back to second even at lower speeds. what i did was well had my bro woking at a mechanics and filled my gearbox up with some honda s2000 gearbox oil and now it runs alike a treat, only thing is that the gear changes aint smooth. its got like a click to it Quote

JedzWagn Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Wish I read this post sooner.. I had the crunchy problem between 3rd and 4th whether shifting up or down but now won't go into gear at all while engine is running. Some times synchro's work again but when this happens the clutch slips... I doubt Rob's little trick will work but it's bloody good to know! Quote
