It might fit.

Just be aware that the rear cam journal on some 5ks and dished 4ks is thinner (widthwise) than on earlier 3/4ks. You could possibly run into the problem of the cam pushing hard up against the welschplug at the back of the block for the cam tunnel.

A welsch plug with less depth inserted into the back of the cam tunnel is one way to allow the use of earlier cams, if you happen to run into this issue.

It is easy to check and see. Throw the cam you are considering using into the block and see if you can tighten the front thrust plate, while still having end play.

hey guys i was wondering what pushrods to use with a 4k head with the stock rocker gear, the 5k block has hydraulic lifters, also I'm not sure what head gasket to use with the 4age pistons

I think your best bet would just be to convert to solids. For this purpose just disregard the fact you're using a 4k head and source the parts for a normal 5k solid conversion. This is essentially my setup - 5k bottom end, 3kbp head, chev lifters and A12 pushrods.

I reckon if you tried to use the 5k hydro lifts, pushrods and non-adjust rocker gear then your pushrods might pull up slightly short, but don't quote me on that.

If its a 5k bottom end, then just use a 5k head gasket. :jamie: Reccomend genuine.

i thought the 4k heads have adjustable rocker gear? yea i have had to change my plan a bit as my budget has decreased alot and i want to get it together before december, so i was trying to work out what i can use out of what i have

Yeah they do. And to convert a 5k to solids you need to use the 4k adjustable rocker gear which you'll already have.

Do you have the hydro pushrods and non-adjust rocker gear?

hmm ill have to have a look, but thanks for the help, i think i have an idea of what i need now, I'm not sure if i can afford a solid conversion though, so ill have to look for hydro push rods and non adjust rocker gear

Yeah well I was going to say if you have those bits then put it all together (basically stock 5k configuration but with the 4k head) and see how much slack (If any) there is in the pushrods.

hm it does look like it! thats strange though as this engine was running an external fuel pump lol, well thanks for the help i will check it out tomorrow

Thats probably your answer as to WHY it was running an external pump.

ok so i found some hydraulic rocker gear, pushrods and a 5k head, will this work with the 4age pistons? or will there be compression issues? how can i find out how much to shave my head? i want to be able to run 98 octane premium, so is a comp ratio of about 10.5:1 right?

The 4age pistons (but with valve recesses) have flat tops yeah? Reckon troy was using a 4k head to lower the CR because of those pistons.

Measure the capacity of the valve recesses in cc's (with a syringe).

The "o-dish" 5k pistons have a 6cc dish and IIRC give a CR of around 10:1 with a stock 5k head.

See what you get, and work out the CR from there. There's a few threads here with the formulars for working out your CR. :P

If they are around 6cc you should be right to use a 5k head instead of a 4k one.
