TommyGun Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 I bought my KE55 about a week ago off a friend of a friend for $300 so i figured it won't be perfect. When accelerating with the clutch out the car makes a sort of whining noise, it's kinda hard to describe. Just wondering if anyone can give me some insight into what might be wrong, someone suggested the clutch to me. I don't know all that much about mechanical stuff so i figured someone may be able to help. Thanks. Quote
TommyGun Posted July 25, 2009 Author Report Posted July 25, 2009 Is there any way i can check that without having to lift up the car and take stuff out? (Sorry for the stupidity...) Quote
irokin Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 Throw out bearing ? Â Throw out bearing usually makes noise when the clutch is depressed, not out. Â My guess would be lay shaft bearings in the gearbox. Is it quiet in 4th gear? Quote
smurf Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 possible thrust bearing. noise when clutch is pushed in to select gears no noise when clutch is out. Quote
TommyGun Posted July 26, 2009 Author Report Posted July 26, 2009 I haven't listened in 4th gear yet, problem is it has no plates on it so i can't really drive it anywhere to get it to 4th... But so far it makes the same nise in first, second and third. Quote
TommyGun Posted July 26, 2009 Author Report Posted July 26, 2009 Ok so i took it for a little spin, it doesn't make the noise that i can notice in 4th at all, and in 3rd it's not as bad as in 1st and 2nd. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Quote
rob83ke70 Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 front shaft bearing in the gearbox is noisy. Â Robert. Quote
tojo2 Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 Should be able to find a cheap K40 gearbox from a ke3x or ke5x Quote
seabiscuit Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 Getting a replacement gearbox would be the way to go. You could upgrade to a 5spd while doing so! If you can do the work yourself (and/or get some mates to help) you'd be looking at $100-$300 for a second hand gearbox plus a good, fun days work! Â Good luck. Quote
TommyGun Posted July 26, 2009 Author Report Posted July 26, 2009 Doing the work myself would pretty much be out of the question haha, i know almost nothing about all that stuff let alone pulling it apart then getting it back together, don't have any friends that know alot about it either that i know of. But thanks heaps for the advice everyone. So, anyone got a good 5spd box for a ke55 they want to get rid of cheap? =P Quote
JiP Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 You know nothing now but in a years time you'll have a great deal of knowledge. When I got my first KE30 I didn't know how to change a gearbox. But a mate helped me out and from then I've known. you just need someone to show you ay. Quote
philbey Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 Keep in mind that you could buy a secondhand box and find it does the same thing too. Quote
