Hey there.

I am new to this site, so please be patient with me. If you find my english a bit rough its because i am danish and can't help it....

I am looking for som advise, since i am planning on installing a different engine in my Celica. It is currently installed with what i belive to be a 2tb? Since i am not updated on all those freakin engine codes i am not sure. All i know is, it is an 1.6 litre engine with 1 cam and 2 carbs. It's fitted with a manuel 5 speed gearbox.

Now my question to you good people is as follows....... What engines will be bolt-on to my gearbox? The reason to my engine swap is, of course, power... So i was hoping that the 20v blacktop/silvertop would fit?

Hoping to get some help

Cheers

Rasmus

A 1.6 single-cam with twin carbies would indeed be a 2TB, my friend. Shouldn't be too bad of a thing itself, definitely better than the 2TCs that we got here.

Obvious upgrade choices would be a 2TG (twin-cam, dual sidedraughts), as it would bolt straight in absolutely no worries, but they're getting hold and harder to come by in good condition. With a little bit of work a 4AGE can fit in quite well, as with all RWD 20v conversions though you'd most likely need to do something about the water outlets on the end of the head, and change the distributor to a CAS and run coil-packs otherwise it could hit the firewall. On the gearbox front, I can't remember exactly if the 4A bolts straight up to the Celica's T50, from memory there is a slight difference in the splines so getting a T50 from an AE71/AE86 would be a better bet (once again may depend on local availability).

There are others on here that will be able to clarify those things for sure, otherwise check out Toymods, they've got plenty of members who have converted 4AGEs into TA22s

2TG will be the easiest and cheapest bolt in solution. These are a twin cam 8 valve head version of your 2T-B motor. Can be found with twin carbs or EFI.

If you want some more work you could get a 3T bottom end and mate the 2TG head to it, which gives a useful increase in capacity and torque.

Then there is the some what rarer 3TGTE. Still pretty much a bolt in proposition I think. Factory turbo, twin spark plug, twin cam head. Getting hard to find these days.

Then there is the 4AGE. which are often modified with a turbo for more grunt. Installing a 4AGE will require some fabrication I imagine as its not just a bolt in job.

Then the sky is the limit depending on how much modification you want to do.

Wich cars came with the 2TG engine as standard?

What parts would i need to mount the 20v in the celica? I have been told, that my gearbox is a W50? is that correct?

The 2TG came in GT-spec TA22/23s, as well as TE27 and TE37 Corollas, possibly some Carinas as well. And your gearbox will be a T50, it wouldn't be a W50 unless you had an R-series engine (or it has been swapped in)

btw a 4age will NOT bolt up to a T series box, i have tried and its out by about an inch.

i think a 2tgte would be pretty awesome and has been done plenty of times before so there is heaps of info out there

It will bolt up to an A-series T50

if he is willing to find a bellhousing and swap it then id go for the 4age because they are extremely common and heaps of parts out there

i have owned 2 ta22 in my life both had engine conversions done by me and my uncle one of them was a 1uz v8 warrior and the other was an rb20 both worked well although took some work. but nevertherless still possible.

i just bought a loose bellhousing for an AE86 today.... cost me about 30$ including shipping. and i decided to go with the 4AGE 140 HP version...

Now my biggest concern is, will my slave cylinder for the clutch fit the new bellhousing?

There are a couple of AE86/AE71 bellhousings for this car. 4AGE has the slave on the right side away from the exhaust, 3A - 4AC has it on the left. Other way to check what you have is looking at the engine type cast into the outside of the bellhousing at the top. In Australia we didn't get rear wheel drive 4AGE's, rather 4AC's, but for some reason the bellhousings have 3A cast into them.

I use the slave out of a TE72 in my 4AGE version bellhousing, and it fits perfectly without any need to adapt things. TE72's and AE86's do not have any adjustment at the slave and the throw out rod seats in a dimple in the pressed steel clutch fork. My dim recollection is that the throw out rod for an early T50 sits within a hole in a cast clutch fork and has facility to adjust the throw out? I am not sure if you can use this TA22 one however.

I would also recommend you have a look on Toymods, there are some pretty amazing TA22's on the members rides thread, including 4AGE equipped amongst other wilder conversions. Great tech threads too. One of the 4AGE/AE86 gurus (Hen) has moved from Australia to Denmark and you may want to find him on Toymods where he is active .

Edit: another good Euro site for 4AGE stuff is aeu86.org, where you will also find all the engine and wiring manuals you may need.

hmm...since i havent recieved the bellhousing yet, theres no way of telling wich one i have bought. But in the end, it's most likely to be the one that my slave cylinder fits.

I have found some engines today. a 124HP and a 140HP... its about the same price, but wich engine will be easiest to tune to apprx. 170 HP?

Edit: As a N/A engine of course ;-)

Edit2: Poor Hen, did he do his research on the danish prices on cars? Ande the insanely strict laws regarding cars, tune ups, yearly approval of cars at a licensed test facility? When it comes to cars, Denmark is the worst place in the world to live.... We pay 180% in tax when we buy a car?!

i know 3tgte's go in with not much hassle but i have also heard the 3tgte heads aren't all the best and another mate told me the turbo's can only handle up to about 250hp

i have done a little looking into a 4age into a celica and i reckon that it will just about drop straight onto the original celica mounts as i am in the process of building a 4agte ta22 celica
