greenmac80 Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 Ok i've been told that i can use 4agze pistons in my 20v. but it'll make the motor an interferance motor.? if this is the case then what are the pros and cons of changing this? Quote
Taz_Rx Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 Con - Snapped timing belt = rattle, bang clunk. Head re-build (at the least) time. Quote
greenmac80 Posted July 14, 2009 Author Report Posted July 14, 2009 Thanks for that any pros? except for pistons being cheap as chips Quote
Taz_Rx Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 ZE pistons and rods? I'm not the greatest source of A series info, but aren't the 20v pistons and rods (I deffinately know the rods are) lighter than 16v ones to make them like the higher RPM!? Yes the ZE pistons would be a bit stronger for boost, but is this really going to help you in an NA motor!? Quote
greenmac80 Posted July 14, 2009 Author Report Posted July 14, 2009 well plans have changed since i have now been in a 20v powered ke. power not gonna do it. so turbo route is happening. hence want to change to ze pistons. i could spend like 1k on arias 20v pistons but for a lot cheaper the ze pistons will handle plenty of boost Quote
the witzl Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 you have to be very careful when putting the engine together or changing the timing belt to ensure you don't rotate the crank to hit and bend an open valve - this can be really annoying when doing such simple things as changing a timing belt! Personally, i would avoid it. You could get the GZE pistons flycut to avoid hitting valves? Quote
MYSTIK[RL] Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 i'll assume you not going to try to setup a low boost setup on the standard engine either? i go with the witzl's comment on getting the gze pistons flycut Quote
greenmac80 Posted July 15, 2009 Author Report Posted July 15, 2009 what do you mean?? i have an HKS timing belt. on the way. the crank rods and pistons are getting balanced as soon as i sort out what pistons i'm gonna use. fully rebuilt. the gze pistons i believe will drop the compression down to about 9:1 or 9.5:1 so plenty. ST are very strong motors. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 (edited) He means getting some recesses for the valves cut into the top of the piston. Edited July 15, 2009 by Taz_Rx Quote
greenmac80 Posted July 15, 2009 Author Report Posted July 15, 2009 yeah will have to talk to my engine builder about getting that done. thanks fellas. Quote
irokin Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Erm, what about the ceramic coating? If you fly cut through that you're going to create nice little hot spots. Even if you recoat them the thickness' will vary and you'll still have temperature differentials. IMO don't use GZE pistons, splash out and do it properly the first time. Quote
