philbey Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 Or another 2 word solution... Zip Ties! Not a bad idea that. If you have a dodgy head gasket, you will find that as it deteriorates, you'll eventually see a browny capuccino type of foam coming out your radiator cap as the car warms up. bruce, if you're mechanically able, it's not much to rip the head off, get it skimmed and put in a new HG, and you should be able to get it all fixed for <100 bucks. Taz_Rx Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 And as I'm coming down to Hobart nearly every weekend lately* I more than happy to come round and help you re-assemble. Would only take us an hour or two if you have everything there ready to go. *Off-topic but, if you haven't seen I'm a dad already (13 weeks early) so I'm coming down regularly to see my boy. Has your missus popped yet? she was due june/july wasn't she? Quote
philbey Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 An hour or two - what happened to 28 minutes? :bash: Quote
Taz_Rx Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 That's allowing ample time for K chat, couple of beers, drain a couple of beers, several nut scratches and maybe a "woops we forgot this bit". :bash: I could probably do a head swap (minus manifolds) in under 28 minutes, but thats something I'd do on Dirt, not somebody elses car. hehehe Quote
webb Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 (edited) If the car never gets to operating temperature, boil the thermostat in a pot of water with a thermometer. Make sure it closes all the way up when cold. If the thermostat checks out ok consider trying this: In very cold climates try partially blocking the radiator as an experiment. Maybe get a bit of cardboard and put it in front of the radiator so it say blocks off half of the fins. If this makes an improvement make up a blind/shutter system that can be controlled from inside the car. I will do that. Note that i have no fan connected up too the engine. but I have a thermo fan (used it about once in the maccas drive thru) ill just buy a new thermostat checking is too much effort haha Edited June 23, 2009 by webb Quote
bruce Posted June 23, 2009 Author Report Posted June 23, 2009 Engines got a cracked piston skirt (rattle), so planning on doing a rebuild; new gaskets, pistons, cam, bit of head work and carbs later on. Looking for a rental house at the moment. Not much around. I'll let you know when I find one.
