any ideas on how to hook up a after market electronic speedo?????????

fitting a sr20 engine to my ke55 and woundering how I'm going to have a speedo??

been looking a t the speco range of gauges and found a electronic one think the product number is 520-00

how do you hook these up ? has any one got a good solution to this?

rather not use my kee55 factory speedo gauge if i can avoid it

ive also seen on here alot of custom fitted guages similar to the one I'm looking at how did you guys gett them to work?

sorry if these are retarded questions , any help be great cheers

Nah mate, valid question.

I was toying with the idea myself, because ever since i saw some ad for a Subaru where the needles in the gauges kind of 'self-test' when you turn the car on (i.e. they flick from right to left and back / from 0km/h to top km/h then back) i thought that was pretty neat-o and wanted to replicate it.

Although i wouldn't have a clue how to do it.

G`day mate, I used an electronic speedo from a bicycle on one of my motorbikes years ago and it worked just fine.

There was a sender attached to the front rim and a pickup attached to the front fork with a single wire running to the speedo. Very accurate setup.

The only thing that crapped me off was tha the speedo was a digital readout type and kept flicking from one number to another. I`m not sure how the speco works but I would imagine that it would have to be a similar setup.

Good luck and let us know if you work it out.

How about a mechanical sender out of an rb20/25 box (forget which on)?

Would be easier and I forget which one it is but it fits in the sr20 box and works on a normal mechanical speedo, ie stock

Cheers.

cheers for that info mate may look into that, I'm also trying to find out if i can use a rb20 rb 30 gear box with a sr20 bell housing , then posibly i could run the mechanical speedo like that way??// hmmmmmmm

I use an Autometer Elec Speedo in my Rotary Corolla, in conjunction with a Hall Effect Sensor.

Do some research as to whether a Hall effect sensor will work in your application. The item bolts onto where the speedo gear is. The drive pin goes from the speedo gear and into Hall Effect Sensor. The unit work on Pulses per revolution, which the Elec speedo reads. From memory, theres 3 wires from the sensor. Ign and Ground and the sensor wire that goes to the Speedo.

Its a pretty simple concept, and it works 100% as you can tune the speedo to suit your application. If you change wheels and tyres, then your able to retune the speedo to suit.

awesum this sounds like what i need, is the sensor an after market sort of thing or will the gauge work with any sensor?

the gauge i was looking at using was a speco it says it can runn off a hall effect sensor, an ecu or a magnetic sensor ,

so I'm guessing it would be prety close to the autometre type of speedo,

I didnt use the genuine Autometer sensor with my Gauge, basically because the drive fitting that came with it wasnt compatible with my speedo gear fitting in the gearbox. I did buy the genuine one to find this out though (still in the back shed i think)

I'm pretty sure i ended up buying a complete sensor and correct drive shaft to suit my gearbox from a place in Geelong, VIC. It was around $80 which was perfect as i couldnt be bothered hunting around for a drive shaft to suit the autometer sensor.

Give them a try

Has anyone fitted the dash (instrument panel) from a S13 into a SR20DET powered KE70?

The tacho and speedo are both fed by wires from the white plug that hangs from the ECU (as far as I can tell...)

I'm guessing that the dash needs power from somewhere, too, then it would be up to the installation how many other warning lights etc. would be attached. It'd be nice to attach the fuel guage, as at the moment I have no idea how much fuel is in the tank :P (the only guage I have that works is the temperature, which hangs around the red end!)

I've seen pictures of KE70s with the instruments from a S13 (one was using the entire dash!).

I've searched forums, but have found little on this subject. Any pointers / is it possible?

If I remember correctly the member Marty K has an S13 (or similar) SR20DET dash unit implanted into his KE30 (very nice car by the way).

Shoot him a PM and he may be able to help you out.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a factory AE86 speedo cable bolted to an S13 box in the past. Leads me to think a landcruiser speed sender may be useable. They bolt straight to the standard cable output. I'll get you a pic if you like.

Any pics would be great!

P.S. I have seen the post about a mechanical sender from the RB20 fitting the SR gearbox, but I reckon the SR's sensor is probably important for the ECU... (If indeed it is working properly on my car - would love to get a 'consult' cable linked up to see what's going on!!!)

ok i ve had a change of direction so now I'm going with a factory 180sx dash ,so has a speedo factory and I'm guessing the speedo signal wire will work off the factory sr20 speed sensor, but i have an rb20 box so still need to figure out if the speed sensor can be fitted to this box or do i still need to do crazy mods to use a factory speed sensor? any one know if they bolt to a rb20 box??????????????
