flat out Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 ok guys, took my car to the mechanics and there diognostic was that the boost is blowing the spark out, the spark was around 10-000 volts where it needed to be around 30-000+, they recomended to go electronic distributor the thing is my old engine was running points and it ran fine, loved the boost, my boss (mechanic) told me that theres something wrong and it might not be getting enough power in, i have tryed new, plugs, points, dizzy'z, condensors, leads are fresh as are the rotor buttons and dizzy caps, i have mucked around with plug and point gap, no difference, also heaps of different timing. it runs better but still not great with the turbo pipe off, aka NA, but still not good-great. i just fitted a new coil and its made no difference, I'm going to test my voltage imput next, before and after the balast, the only other thing i can think of is a dirty earth? or not enough earth straps? think it has one or 2 atm? any help at all would be great as its really starting to annoy me if it helps iths a 2tc with a blow thru turbo system Quote
Falken_KE30 Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 Is the battery in boot? Is the battery in good condition? Could possibly be a bad earth, Have you tried running a Hi Energy coil without a ballist resistor, I'm sure that causes the points to burn out quicker but might give a stronger spark?, but so will your tyres and other parts anyway :y: Maybe try a MSD ignition box thing, provides like 3 times the spark. then again it don't explain why it ran on last motor :hmm: Quote
Medicine_Man Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 Intensity of the spark is due to the field collapsing faster, That's why transistorized ignition systems are better for this sort of thing. Do yourself a favor an invest in an electronic dizzy.. Quote
flat out Posted June 11, 2009 Author Report Posted June 11, 2009 yeah thats what every one says, but imo its just masking the issue, i just need to get the ignition system running as good as it should with the points, if that fails me then elec is the way Quote
philbey Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 The point about the MSD is a good idea though - I'd run the Crane Cams Hi-6 over the MSD 6AL, its a digital unit (vs Analog in the MSD's), cheaper, and has a much nicer in built rev limiter setup too. Quote
Felix Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 I'd use a multimeter and check the voltage at the coil. 10,000 volts is very low. I've got one of those spark tester tools. My ke15 with points dizzy, echlin sports coil and older dick smith HEI kit puts out 30,000 volts at idle. When I had a 5k electronic dizzy with Bosch transformer coil it put out 40,000 volts at idle. flat out Posted June 11, 2009 Author Report Posted June 11, 2009 yeah the crane one was what the parts store had, the guy that was going to tune it recomended the msd, but ild rather a crow sticker :y: $280? from memory maybe cheaper, then ill get a decent coil aswell. does anyone think that an extra earth strap would help? Quote
Taz_Rx Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 flat out said: does anyone think that an extra earth strap would help? Can never have enough earth mate! :y: Only problem with the hi-6 is I don't think you can get a Hi-6 "BTM" equivelent (I know casey knows what I mean). Quote
flat out Posted June 13, 2009 Author Report Posted June 13, 2009 ok, brought a spark tester, I'm getting a max of 22-000 volts on idle, still coughing but no excessive bangs, more like a fuel suge? Quote
flat out Posted June 13, 2009 Author Report Posted June 13, 2009 it was just how they come from the box, then i gapped them right down, just buy eye, no feeler guage Quote
irokin Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 I'd be gapping them properly, at a guess probably to something like 0.040. Also whats the heat range of the plugs? Its possible they're too cold. Just to give you an idea how much voltage turbo motors have for spark, the SR20DET coilpacks produce about 40,000 volts. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 MSD BTM ie Boost Timing Master. Has a vacuum line to it and retards the timing for boost. Quote
flat out Posted June 14, 2009 Author Report Posted June 14, 2009 its going a little better, going to buy a crane elec dizzy conversion this week and a coil to suit, been driving it, too noisy tho, goes well under load but wont rev past 4k Quote
