I have a 20V motor with a t50 box in a Clubman 7 car. I want to use the 20v reduction starter re- located to the driver’s side of the box as I have two lying around. The starter on the LHS is getting fried by exhaust headers. Unfortunately I do not have the 20v FWD box to cut (butcher) the starter motor bulge/housing from, and weld to the T50. Does anybody know if any Australian delivered car has the same starter motor housing bolt pattern as the 20v? Or does anybody have a 20v box that I could butcher for the job? My location is Brisbane Western Suburbs.

Any comments or advice appreciated.

Is the starter motor getting hot where you currently have it or actually ceasing to work due to the heat?

Plenty of people have used the starter motor located under the headers for quite some time without any issue. This is the most common and easy way to do it when converting 20V to RWD.

What type of headers are you using and are they quite close to the starter motor?? You may be able to use a different type of header/extractor which might be easier and cheaper than say modifying the bell housing.

Do you have any pictures of your set-up?

those gear reduction starters they are off an ae93 or later yes? if so I suggest something a bit different. Those starters are not that easy to come by and are somewhat sought after. I suggest you sell them and buy something else instead. If you went that way you would get a reaosnable price, I think I saw the last one go for $70 on ebay but it was a while ago and my memory might be bad. The reason I say this is because by memory the only difference between these and the much more common gear reduction type fitted to the 5sfe engines in the celicas/camry's is the orientation of the mounting holes. So not only would of get some money back but you would end up with a starter thats easy to replace. As for your question as far as I know all 4a and 7a engines have the same distance between mounting points as each other. That means the rwd types like what you have now and the FWD ones. I suggest you look at the type fitted to the ae82 corolla as it has the "ears" on both sides of the bellhousing so you have a choice, really common too.

As luke said show some pics and also welcome to the forum

Luke: while your point is very valid he may have not have the luxury or space as we do and his pipes may be very close to the starter. That said though I would of thought sneaking a heatshield in there and a ceramic coating woudl tottaly fix it.

That's a FWD gearbox though, the C52 (otherwise known as the Mickey Mouse, because of the two starter motor humps) is on all FWD/MRWD 4AGEs and 7AFEs.

Sam, I agree and this is why I asked the question. I wonder how much room is in there????

yeah I know its FWD but it doesnt matter really if all he wants to do is chop an ear off and put in on the rwd box.

Thanks for the replies. I have two 20v starters, and it is good to know that they may be worth something. I have seen one clubman that had the re-location job done, hence the question. My current starter (ae86?) misbehaves and i suspect it may be heat related. I guess I could just replace it when it burns out.
