ae93rolla Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 hey i have a problem with my 4age in my 93 rolla idling when the AC is on she idles at about 600-1000 when ac is on and is unstable, she doesnt just sit on 1k or 600 she moves all over the place!!!! does any one know how i can fix this? my 4age uses too much fuel she goes through pretty much a full tank in little over 150ks and i have only a pod in the car, can anyone help on this? Hiro Protagonist Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 (edited) What is your idle like when the air-con is off? (Note I'm assuming you've got a smallport 16v 4AGE) When you turn the air-con on, there should be an idle-up valve that opens to let an extra amount of air past the throttle body to take into account the extra load of the air-con compressor - this valve could be sticking or otherwise not functional As for the fuel consumption, how many litres are you going through (also assuming fuel gauge is accurate)? Do you blow excessive amounts of black smoke when driving? Does the car feel sluggish or otherwise under-powered? Are the spark plugs fouled? Is your oxygen sensor reading correctly? As you have a pod, are there sensors or valves which have been removed from the intake? Best thing to do is get your hands on a 4AGE diagnostics manual, do a diagnostics check on the car (bypassing the TE1 and E1 pins in the diagnostics plug with a paper-clip and then counting the flashes of the Check Engine Light on the dashboard) and see what that tells you first. If it is being burnt, then you'd notice a _lot_ of black smoke (rear bumper would probably be covered in soot too). AFRs would be stupidly rich, too. Check the O2 sensor, even get it dynoed to see power and AFRs. If they are fine, and the O2 sensor is fine, then about the only think I can think of is that it is leaking somewhere, or evaporating somehow. Quote
Felix Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 Did it have an air temp sensor in the original filter housing? Is it still hooked up after the change to the pod filter? Quote
ae93rolla Posted May 7, 2009 Author Report Posted May 7, 2009 not sure if the original filter had a temp sensor bu ill check soon, nd nothin is leaking, and ill check everythin tonight Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 Did it have an air temp sensor in the original filter housing? Is it still hooked up after the change to the pod filter? Doubt just the air-temp sensor alone would cause that drastic fuel consumption, for a long time I was running the AE82 TC without an air-temp sensor at all and it's fuel consumption was only around 8L/100km. AFRs were rich on the dyno, but only around 11:1. Quote

As stated earlier, you should run a diagnostics check on the ecu. Then maybe with the help of a manual, and a multimeter start testing sensors. Quote

Although cold-start only adds the extra cold-start injector, not more fuel from the main 4. Quote
Felix Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 If he's going through 50 liters in 150 kays you would think it would have to be pissing out black smoke. :P Quote

ae93rolla Posted May 10, 2009 Author Report Posted May 10, 2009 so ive fixed the idle but I'm not sure on whats going on with the fuel consumption yet Quote
the witzl Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 lack of water temp sensor and/or air temp sensor wouldnt cause those kinds of fuel consumption numbers. You have a fuel leak.... its that simple. Check the ENTIRE fuel system.... its coming out somewhere! Quote
