Toy-Yoda[RL] Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 (edited) Well I figure I better start a thread on this thing for two reasons, 1: I'm about to do some work to it 2: It's trying to kill me, so I may as well post it up before it gets the chance Ok, a few of you would have seen this thing at the recent cruise, it is the replacement for the Panel Van that found a ditch (found more stuff to take pictures of BTW, will get some tomorrow), and best of all, it was cheap. So I buy it unregistered, do some of the dodgiest ghetto repairs known to man, and get it registered, engine sounds like death but is surprisingly strong, radiator leaks, gearbox sounds like it wants to drop a cog or three, diff clunks n rattles and has some epic backlash, and the headlights point in two separate directions, so it's perfect for me....... However, just the other night it decided to run out of brakes as I was going into a busy intersection, pulled up in time thanks to my good friends "compression lock" and "hand brake", it seems that one of the seal things in the passenger side drum isn't much good and has allowed all my brake fluid to become someone elses skid assistant...... That plus all the noise it's emitting makes me think a new diff is in order...... The engine, rad, and gearbox from the van will be going in this weekend, maybe the diff as well, see how I go for time. Is it safe to run a diff in a car if it doesn't have traction brackets when the old diff did have them? The aim is to get it lower, sitting on some decent fat rubber, boosted and capable of taking some punishment..... I'll be updating as things move on, I plan to take my time and do a decent job of this (within reason, I'm going to build it to be driven hard, not look good) rest assured, this one won't see a ditch at least until the turbo goes on  It's red, it's dirty, it's old and abused, but it's a Rolla and it's mine. Cheers, Yoda. Taz_Rx Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 I'll have some spare bits from Mud for you shortly buddy. Got a new house so that projects about to go into full swing. Quote
Toy-Yoda[RL] Posted May 1, 2009 Author Report Posted May 1, 2009 Very cool  Well I went to bolt my shiny new engine crane together today, only to discover that there were no bolts supplied in the box(es) , a mildly miffed phone call later, and the shop I bought it from told me to bring it in and they would buy the bolts and assemble it for me too, so I'm ok with that...... They were very good about it, and very apologetic, couldn't ask for a nicer sales team, I'm impressed. Anyway, if all goes well, I'll have a new engine in tomorrow, pics to come! Quote
Taz_Rx Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 You going to be able to transport it once its built? I could run it from the shop to your place in the van if need be. .....then you might be happier when I ask you to borrow it!!! Quote
Falken_KE30 Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 He has the Hilux Si, so transporting it no prob... Car sounds/looks/is/and still will be like death  Quote
Toy-Yoda[RL] Posted May 1, 2009 Author Report Posted May 1, 2009 Engine crane is home, in one piece and ready to go, it's all on! Quote
Sturgey Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 yeh heavy bugger it was lol was amusing watching ben try to get it up the grass driveway though  Quote
Toy-Yoda[RL] Posted May 1, 2009 Author Report Posted May 1, 2009 Would have been funnier if you saw me doing it with a 3T hanging off the crane....... That was hell....... Cheers for the help sturge, don't think my back would have liked me if I tried to lift the bastard by myself....... Sleep now, spanners in the morning...... Quote
Toy-Yoda[RL] Posted May 2, 2009 Author Report Posted May 2, 2009 (edited) Well, engine and box are in, slowed down all day due to the crane getting bogged every time we put weight on it  Thanks for all the help Dan, appreciate it. Doing exhaust tomorrow, and hooking the engine up, and fixing the brake seal thingy that's stuffed...... Then I skid it till the diff pops..... :hmm: *Edit* Pics of damage to the van as promised...... This is where you can see into the car from the wheel well, it seems I hit hard enough to split that seam with the tire....... This one is the passenger side tie rod tube, proper bent. And this is an example of how NOT to jack up a car....... *don't lift cars up using string, kids, it's bad, mmmkay?* Edited May 2, 2009 by Toy-Yoda Quote
Toy-Yoda[RL] Posted May 3, 2009 Author Report Posted May 3, 2009 (edited) :) Yeah, string (rope really, just thin, old, crap rope), it worked though...... Engine is now in and running, all bolted together and probably drivable, YAY! No reverse lights as the connectors are different and I'm crap at wiring, will get a mate to do it later....... The last part of the bloody exhaust from the van didn't fit, and it's quieter than it was on the van without it's hotdog....... Will rectify once some bills are out of the way...... Bring the noise! Need to fix the brake seal thing soon so I can drive it, but not planning on taking it far anyway as the exhaust is currently pointing directly at the passenger side rear shock absorber, that could end well...... Toy-Yoda[RL] Posted May 4, 2009 Author Report Posted May 4, 2009 Ah so thats who took Dan's extractors. :) Huh? Who? Wasn't me, mine came with the van........ Quote
Toy-Yoda[RL] Posted May 5, 2009 Author Report Posted May 5, 2009 you suck at wiring :hmm: :P You suck at explaining stuff  Quote
