z|gen Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 hey - yes, i did a search, but it didnt bring anything up. iv decided to drain the oil for once in my k40 g/box, does anyone know what size socket to use to remove the drain plug ? cheers David Quote
demuire Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Tried a 14mm, 17mm or 19mm socket? I have a feeling it would be one of those. Quote
z|gen Posted May 6, 2005 Author Report Posted May 6, 2005 haha, after going through my complete socket set, we have found it. its a 24MM socket :P thanks for your help guys :) first g/box oil change in about 5 years :D mmm yummy Quote
demuire Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Wow, that's big. I guess so is the drain plug on some of the older Corolla diffs. The T50 drain plug is a fair bit smaller, I think. Quote
Xany Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 yeah i knew it was over the 20mm range.....its a big sucker. the filler plug on the side is 17mm i'm pretty sure. easier to take the gearshifter out though. Quote
demuire Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Even if you did take the gearshifter out you'd still need to take the filler plug off anyway so you know how much oil to put in :) Quote
z|gen Posted May 6, 2005 Author Report Posted May 6, 2005 haha, nah, i just fill it back up through the shifter hole - it takes around 1.5 ltrs, my sump drain plug on the engine (3K) was a 19mm, but my new engine is only a 14mm (3SGTE) thanks for all ya help dudes Quote
Nitephyre Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 nick, question... is this a stupid question? :) Quote
Super Jamie Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 gearbox plugs are huge, i had to buy a socket just for draining boxes. there are at least 3 different engine sump bolt heads. i also just drain the box out the bottom and full thru the shifter hole like zigen. i've ever even taken a filler plug out of a K box :) Quote
andrew Posted May 8, 2005 Report Posted May 8, 2005 well hows this for odd, the corona's one is 26mm!?! what the?? Quote
Super Jamie Posted May 8, 2005 Report Posted May 8, 2005 y'all need to take the clutch off a mini, it's like a single 1.5" nut Quote
blown 5k Posted May 8, 2005 Report Posted May 8, 2005 Gotta love taper fit flywheels in confined spaces NOT! :P Quote
Super Jamie Posted May 8, 2005 Report Posted May 8, 2005 haha someone who knows :P yes, on top of that, the flywheel is held onto the engine by a taper which needs about 10 million ft-lb of torque to release luckily, we know an old mini mechanic, who has done this many thousands of times himself, and has made up a custom puller which would probably be the most ingenious piece of engineering ever, and lets you get the flywheel off still in the engine bay Quote
