aii2kaii Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Hey all. I'm new here. I have a few questions about what i can and can't do to a Toyota Corolla SECA AE92, with a 4A-FC engine. Firstly I'm wondering if it is possible to install a pod filter into it? What can i do, that dosn't cost too much money to increase the performance? Daniel Quote
trav_555 Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 You can install a pod filter on just about everything :P its just a filter! For performance on the cheap..... The usual i guess? 2" exhaust, and extractors? Aftermarket ecu if you want to go that far? or even cams? You want a turbo? Whack a 4age head on it and turbo it with lowish boost, easy as. quick power upgrade Look around, most modifications done to any engine can be transplanted somehow onto your engine, just need to know where to look and how to do it, and its only as cheap as you can get the parts and/or as much as you can do yourself. Cheers Travis Quote
MYSTIK[RL] Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Aftermarket ecu if you want to go that far? on a 4afc!!! :hmm: i must have a rare 4afc then if it doesnt have a computer :P mate its a carby no computer :P Anyways now to the original poster, nothing cheap can increase the power of a 4afc, its one of is the economy twincams that toyota developed. best suggestion here would be to work on the suspension, to get it handling nicely and then do an engine swap, or once funds permit buy another ae9x with a 4age then swap over all your suspension and have the best of both worlds :y: p.s i did the suspension on my 4afc corolla, then bought a one with an 4age later on down the track and swapped 90% of my suspension over to the 4age corolla Quote
towe001 Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 ^^ and think of all that nice hot air getting sucked up by the motor and decreasing the horse power gain. All its good for is induction noise. If you what to run a pod filter have it mounted correctly boxed off from the engine bay and run a pipe or hose from out side the engine bay. For performance on the cheap..... The usual i guess? 2" exhaust, and extractors? Aftermarket ecu if you want to go that far? or even cams? 4a-fc its carby fed. So a ECU is out of the question. You want a turbo? Whack a 4age head on it and turbo it with lowish boost, easy as. quick power upgrade :P when you think about it the carby manifold is better suited for a turbo cause the intake part, where the carby sits, is centrally located meaning that each cylinder will be getting equal air/fuel mixture along with equal ramming of the mixture into the cylinder's. The 4age manifold is a log type design with No.1 cylinder being closer to the throttle body and cylinder No.4 being further away. No.4 will get more of a ram effect whereas No.1 will have to fight for its share. Thats not to say it doesn't work cause it does work, just have a look at the range of off-the-shelf do-it-yourself turbo kits. But to really make a log manifold really work your have to make one that narrows down to cylinder No.4 so that extra cylinder gets a fair share. While the 4a-fc manifold is already fitting the bill and all it needs is a turbo ready carby or throttle body and a J-pipe. But getting back to cheap upgrades - Remember these words and think about what it means "Its all in the breathing." 2 inch exhaust maybe with extractors if you can afford them. Better air filter (eg: K and N) and being able to have the motor suck in fresh clean cool air, and a spark plug upgrade to, say, those Bosch 4-way plugs (or what ever their called) Quote

Daniel low cost would be different carby (32/36 weber), cut a hole in the bonnet and ram it into the weber with a K&N, change the oil, run hi octance 98 fuel and slightly adavnce the timing, make sure your tyre pressures are spot on. spend anymore money than this on a 4AFC in my personal opion your better of saving your money for a better performance car such as a AE93 thingo. trav_555 Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 on a 4afc!!! :y: i must have a rare 4afc then if it doesnt have a computer :P mate its a carby no computer :hmm: Dammit!! i always do that!!!! I wrote all that thinking it was a 4AFE!!! :P Sorry, disregard anything to do with injection unless you want to convert it to injection :( Travis Quote
aii2kaii Posted April 22, 2009 Author Report Posted April 22, 2009 Pod Filter: What steps did you go through to install yours? Quote
ae824ate Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Dude, 4afc. Get the C? Carby, Doesnt have an ecu, and putting a ge head on a 4afc? Wtf? Quote
trav_555 Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Wow you are retarded, maybe you should watch this bid before you try to start a flame war :P I already said to forget that And I'm not sure about 4afc but since when i was writing it I thought it was a 4afe, the 4afe has lower compression when you stick a 4age head on them So :P Travis Quote
kimberleyrolla Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 What steps did you go through to install yours? Steps were: 1) Rip off all the stock intake. 2) Plug up the Air Suction Valve hole in the head (pipe from the exhaust manifold to the air cleaner). 3) Buy these bits: 1 * 63mm 90degree rubber elbow (attaches to the carb nicely) 1 * 63-75mm (2 1/2" to 3") silicon adaptor - Calibre brand. 1 * Calibre 3" pipe (don't know much more than that) 1 * SCA Pod Filter 1 * Rocker cover breather (not shown in pic) FYI - cut piece of the existing vac hose and mount the breather over the top as they usually have a bigger diameter. Hose clamps. Fit it all. I just strapped the piping to the fuel filter until I come up with a proper bracket. Sounds sweeeeet! You could do it with top $ parts and I'm sure it'll be better than this. I spent less than a K&N filter alone :-) Yes, it's a HAI (hot air intake) but was only meant to be temporary until a weber fits into the budget. Redline auto just sent me this FYI (specifically for 4AFC) - 22680-005 32-36 dgv weber $599.68 inc gst 10-112 adaptor $51.61 inc gst 16-42 air filter $52.25 inc gst 42-21 basic linkage kit $43.77 inc gst Quote

And getting back to more power for cheap - high energy coil Quote

Do you rekon you could get a video of the sound it makes? By the way what did you use to plug up the Air Suction Valve hole? Quote
Budowski Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 599 is pretty high for a 32/36 style webber but I'm sure that cost would include warrenty and reconditioned/new could pick up one on the forsale section from $50 and get it rekitted for 150-180 ish. Quote
19914afc Posted August 16, 2009 Report Posted August 16, 2009 with that HAI how did you go about the other immisions thing that goes from the left side of the carb (standing at the front of the car) because when I ran mine without that on it sounded like a old VW also with the vaccume hose that has to be blocked off you can just use a M8 bolt or something that fits in the hose sung.
