camerondownunder88 Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 If it started smoking when the engine was at running temp the valve stems are GONE. That was what happen to my original K-B head in the 1960 valve stem seals didn't exist so when the valve wears the guide it allows oil to freely pass through the valve guide making LOADS of smoke. Have a look at the pipe that goes from the rocker cover to the ground the vent much smoke? Also the pipe on my KE15 was 100% blocked when I got it can recommend clearing it asap. The biggest problem with the K motor was this when it started leaking on the valve stem seals and since this is all original 100% chance it is the valves. Cameron Quote

Head off for a service? Or something else? Quote
camerondownunder88 Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Head off fit KE70 valve guides. BUT K-B heads are RARE AS. What I would do. Get a big port 3K head shave it so will keep the original K-B compression new KE70 valve guides with the better seal (well KE30 on wards got the better seal) And while I'm there id clean up valve seats with 3 angle grind and polish exhaust ports lightly. This will give you more power wont ruin a good K-B head and then it can be done still drive car swap head keep driving easy. Then id get K-B head cleaned up new original valve guides with crap seal and stash it for the ground up rebuild one day. Also note can't get the gasket for a K-B anymore has to be custom made also my head corroded out around the head to inlet hole REALLY badly unsaleable even with welds. So kinda be prepared for some corrosion also when it comes apart. But in short head off new valve guides. Cameron Quote

silverra23 Posted May 2, 2009 Author Report Posted May 2, 2009 Well two weeks into ownership I have given the old girl a wash, a good clean inside, an oil change and a coolant change. The old bloke who used to own it must have been a short ass. He had some timber blocks in under the rear mounts for the drivers seat, propping it up about 20mm. No wonder it felt weird when I was driving it! A good wash indicates it needs a respray so that the surface rust is attended to. Doors have a bit of rust in the bottoms, but that is the only real bad rust to speak of. Drivers seat is buggered and needs re-trimming. Rear seat has a few spots where the seams have split, but can be re-sewn so all good on that front. Engine is going to need a rebuild I think. Pretty sure the smoke clouds are telling me rings are gone! There seems to be a poorly done repair around the rear boot badge. Paint is different colour and almost brushed on. THe Toyota badge is held on by three self tappers! So will be on the hunt for one of those eventually Here are some more pics... Boot is amazingly clean and straight Carpets are pretty damned good considering their age.. apart from the drivers side which is knackered. The little silver rings you can see are actually holding press studs to hold the carpet down on mounts in the floor - I don't know if this is factory or done by the owner This is a little tag on the ventilation controls explaing their settings. Apparently all the KE1*'s had this when they were delivered. (got to get rid of that clock on the console I think!) Seats are generally in sensational shape, apart from drivers seat and some tape holding split stitching on the rear seat. Engine bay cleaned up ok Quote
silverra23 Posted May 2, 2009 Author Report Posted May 2, 2009 Engine bay continued Some more interior shots Sun-visors in plastic The holy grail.. an interior light cover that hasn't disappeared! Standard gear knob Some exterior shots Quote

78_7kRolla Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 (edited) This is the best. The more and more i look at it the more warm and fuzzy i feel inside! Great to see it's in such great shape to start with. Look after her and i'm sure i'll be seeing it on some cruises in the near future. Matt. Edited May 3, 2009 by 78_7kRolla Quote
silverra23 Posted May 3, 2009 Author Report Posted May 3, 2009 Now a question.. would a set of 13 inch superlites be sacriligious (spelling?!) or would they be OK. If I had a set of watanabes in 13" that would be even better.. but they seem to be hard to get in 4x110... Quote
Tally Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 my opinion, watanabes or keep it original with hubcaps... Quote

If I had a set of watanabes in 13" that would be even better.. but they seem to be hard to get in 4x110... The right 13" wheels would be fine. And yes your carpet is original, remove it and give it a clean with a pressure cleaner, you'll be amazed at the results. As for the wear on the drivers side a pair of nice mats usually make it look a whole lot better !!!. Quote
smeetsy1 Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 go reversable jap-spec mods :) haha ...or stock :D Quote

You'll pay good money for a new set of superlites, although you could probably wait around for some decent second hand ones to come around. Same with Watanabes - will probably just have to wait around for a good set! :D Bloody amazing condition the car is in. It better stay that way. :) ps. Couldn't believe it when I read the bit about the tag on the heater controls. You must have found this in a time-capsule. Edited May 3, 2009 by seabiscuit Quote
