ke20rolla Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 Hi all, I have bought a secondhand 5k motor today out of a Liteace van, and I noticed that on one side of the sump there is a solenoid with a wire coming off it, also along the manifold side of the head are some small pipes that screw into the cyl head. :S So if anyone has an answer about what these two things are used for, then that would be awesome. :y: :bash: as my other 5k in my ke20 doesn't have this stuff. Is this 5k I picked up today a later or an import motor????? Cheers, Mark. 8| :y: Quote
SLW42 Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 the small pipes could be for egr crap do they go into either of the manifolds?? Quote
Taz_Rx Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 Some heads (don't know what vehicle) had some weird anti polution stuff that used these pipes. Do the come off the top (manifold side) corner of the head on a 45* angle? Was looking at one the other day. Fitting in sump might be an aftermarket oil temp sensor. Does it look stock? .....and was the engine siezed? Quote
dfunkt Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 i also have an unknown fitting in the sump of my 5K. i thought it was for oil temp. but have never bothered to hook it up to anything to test it. i had a look around http://www.toyodiy.com for a picture or listing of what it could be, but haven't found anything yet. have looked at ke72, km20, km26 and km30. camerondownunder88 Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 Some K motors came with factory oil cooler fitted (vans 5K and 7K) it is in the EPC for toyota. Also the weird pipes will be air injection that Taz talked about is a pollution thing. If you have that your 5K is 98% most likely a flat top 5K with solid lifters NICE FIND :bash: Cameron Quote

So that explains it. I thought there was no such thing as a flat top 5k!? Quote
camerondownunder88 Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 Hi, Read your other thread also this is a nother type of 5K heaps exist with radator cap on top of thermostat those housings are great for bigger radator setups that don't have the cap on the radator. Also I had a 4K-E once had hte sensor with wire in sump think I threw it out dare say it would tell ECU oil temp or something. Also Taz flat tops exist but the dished piston ones are WORLDS better  :y: BUT flat top 5K can use stock 4k push rods and normal 3F lifters solid conversion piss easy and parts are easy to get as same head as a 4k. Cheers Cameron Quote
ke20rolla Posted April 3, 2009 Author Report Posted April 3, 2009 Thanks guy's for all your comments :y: I pulled the rocker cover off tonight and it has hydralic lifters. I will try and get a couple of pics of it tomorrow, Cheers mark. Quote
ke20rolla Posted April 4, 2009 Author Report Posted April 4, 2009 I removed the manifolds and air injection from the motor today. And I was looking above the engine number, and casted in the block reads 1486cc which my other 5k hasn't got. :y: hope to get pics soon. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted April 4, 2009 Report Posted April 4, 2009 Just saw this in medicine mans projects thread... I'm guessing that is the sump fitting you're talking about? Quote
ke20rolla Posted April 5, 2009 Author Report Posted April 5, 2009 (edited) Hi, I just pulled the head of the 5k because when I bought it they told me it was seized. It has flat top pistons :y: . There was a lot of rust in the bores and around the top of the pistons so I cleaned it up and squirted some crc in the motor, but it still wouldn't budge. I then removed the sump and squirted some more crc inside and I looked at the pistons and stamped inside them reads, aisan and toyota. I gave the crankshaft a bit of a hit with a block of wood a few times to loosen the motor but nothing happened. Then I put the sump back on and was about to remove the flywheel, started to undo the bolts and then the motor turned a little. Kept on turning the motor back and forth until it loosened up. :y: :y: . Looks like I will be taking this motor to get reconditioned rather than buying a dodgey exchange engine. TRD ke70 Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 that thing in the side of the sump is a oil level light. Because it's a commercial engine it has it, most commercial van engines had them. Quote
ke20rolla Posted April 6, 2009 Author Report Posted April 6, 2009 The motor is off to the machine shop tomorrow to get bored out, get flat top pistons and a mild cam grind and new valves etc etc.  Quote
