Hi guys,

Just a stupid topic for you

I was talking to this guy driving a Capri the other day about his exhaust and it sounded sweet. He told me he had removed the centre muffler. I assume this is the resonator so I was thinking about removing mine in my KE55.

I'd rather people not tell me to go buy a full exhaust system because I haven't got the time, nor money and Mum won't let me because she believes I'll make too much power and "prang", being a P-plater and all.

I understand that it might be a bit loud and such, so I'm going to put some flanges on it to make it interchangable with some straight-through pipe - just in case. I'm planning it for the school holidays so my question is:

Has anyone done this or have any suggestions?

Thanks fellas :bash:

I Lol'ed.

A bigger exhaust wont make much extra power. I remember a while ago that having a muffler removed and a pipe put in instead was about $50.

from what i know the only job a resonator does is change the exhaust note. it stops the 'cracking' noise associated with straight through pipes. think motor bike or early race car noise. it's the muffler that changes the volume.

my solution would be keep the resonator and ditch the muffler or swap it for a less restrictive one.

Well I'm not really after volume or more power, just a good tone to go slow with!

I would maybe replace the end muffler one day, but until then I wanna try this.

Any idea what an early racecar sounds like? lol

(new to the revhead industry)

A resonator is not a muffler. Most cars have at least two mufflers in the system, the first one (usually just after the cat) often gets replaced (but not always) in an aftermarket system with a resonator/hotdog, but some systems keep it.

i was cheap and dodgy with my first ke30 and cut the rear muffler out and welded a bit of 3" galvinised drain pipe to it. it was too loud and sounded crap so i cut a section of pipe out and welded another resonator in. wasnt too loud but still sounded crappy. but then i got a 2" fitted with lukey muffler, much better

it will drone and sound like a homo excel/lancer.

don't do it.

nor should you put a cannon on your car :bash:

it would sound tough until you put a carby and a big cam and a set of extractors and a well designed system.

all of which will cost you money and is really a waste of money, coz it will still be slow as a wet week...

hell yeah no cannons. they are shit on old cars

The cannon sounded awesome on my old KE55. Then again, it was only a small cannon. Then again, it also was the only form of noise control in the entire exhaust (straight pipe ftw :bash:). Looked and sounded like a rally car, pity it didn't go like one.

So it sounded different to all the other shitbox Lancers and Hyundai's getting around with cannons? More 4k-like?

Due to the complete and utter lack of any other kind of muffler (or even a cat or hotdog), yes it sounded heaps better than a fart cannon-equiped shitbox Lancer/Excel. Best thing was that it'd often crackle/pop on the over-run or under engine braking

Being a relatively small cannon probably helped

I've got a video of it running around somewhere, I'll try and find it

AE71 - resonator cracked at the input pipe.

I ripped the resonator out and replaced it with a straight through section of exhaust pipe.

I took this approach because I was simply too cheap to:

  • have the crack repaired (it would've meant a new resonator)
  • go to u-pullit and grab a replacement resonator

I was kinda hoping it might sound better but I don't think it actually made any difference at all to the sound level ...

So: if there was any change, it was negligible.

cheers,

Slapper

Yes please!

I love that popping and crackling sound. Strange thing is you can get that sound from the stock exhaust if you try hard enough!
