JiP Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 Hey guys, does anyone know how to remove the mirror from the plastic?? I'm wanting to freshen up my mirrors and don't want paint on the mirror. thanks, Jon. Quote

JiP Posted March 6, 2009 Author Report Posted March 6, 2009 That's not being helpful now is it!! Quote
roladude Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 shouldn't the rubber /plastic just clip of with a bit of force  or you could just take the time and tape it up :D Quote
JiP Posted March 6, 2009 Author Report Posted March 6, 2009 I think eventually it will chip from the taped end. And how do I unclip?? I think they are glued in with sikaflex or something. Quote

JiP Posted March 6, 2009 Author Report Posted March 6, 2009 I went into a really dark room and shone a light up the mount hole so I could see inside behind the mirror. There is about a 1cm ring around the edge of the mirror. I might see if one of my mirrors is bad and smash it. Quote

Easy to install when the plastic was new and flexible, the mirror plastic housing now being 30 years old has hardened and will make removal difficult. Quote

furryfrog Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 When i sprayed up my bike mirrors i didnt mask anything, just used a new razor blade and the paint comes straight off the glass. Quote
KE30_KE35_KE55 Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 (edited) Just mask it up with narrow masking tape around the edges. you can buy masking tape less than 1.5mm wide, pictured below. Edited March 6, 2009 by KE30_KE35_KE55 Quote
JiP Posted March 7, 2009 Author Report Posted March 7, 2009 I might paint the whole thing and scrape the paint off the glass. My only other option is maybe sticking a flat headed screwdriver in the mount hole and pushing on the glass. I'm afraid to scratch the backing tho. I think i'll need to open this one up anyway as the bolt from the inside has fallen inside. Quote
chestikoph1 Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 Hey, i have done this before What i did was get the end of a tape measure (the bit shaped like an L) and slot it behind the mirror and pull. My mirror glass was sikafexed in place with few blobs on each corner. Hope that helps Quote
JiP Posted March 7, 2009 Author Report Posted March 7, 2009 Yeah mate, I'll give it a go. thanks. Quote
PHATKE20S Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 Hey mate. I've painted many mirrors before and you just tape them up. Then use a razor blade carefully, on a 45deg angle, to trim the edges. Just a small hint, leave a piece of tape sticking out in the middle (coz it can be difficult to lift the tape up once it's painted over) Depending on how neatly you trimmed the edges, you may have to clean up the mirror carefully with the blade......
