More like "Proton bought 10/20-year-old Mitsubishi engines and chasssis and put their own badges on them". They never had MIVEC engines though, from memory, same with Hyundai and Kia.

 

I thought the engine in the Kia Spectra we had at work the other day looked alot like the Hyundai Lantra engine my Dad's other half has which is a copy of the 4G93.

Decent Mitsu engines: 1.6L MIVEC - Mitsubishi Mirage Cyborg - they had a one make race series of these here a few years ago, meaning you might be able to find something, if you've got lots of $$$ keep an eye on MY105.com, I know complete cars have gone for close to $10K (sell off bits, you might be surprised), also Please Consider (ROFLMAO) non-MIVEC 4G63 (I think) from Proton Satria GTI (and its predecesor) in N/A form; and early Lancer GSR in turbo form. All these engines are fwd/awd, but I think may bolt up to Mitsubishi Sigma 'boxes. If you are serious you could buy a Sigma for next to nothing, do a engine/gearbox swap, then engine transplant once you have all the mounts etc. sorted out

mate of a mate put a MIVEC motor into his mirage. apparently it fair hammered (although FWD gheyness) and could nearly hit 100kmh in first gear at the limiter. not sure if he used the stock gearbox or what.
