africanmarty Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 (edited) I am interested in getting a 2001 toyota corolla sportivo turbo. Since the engine is stock AE112R with a turbo and intercooler added, i woudn't add any boost to it. But instead I had a plan of putting a bigger front mount intercooler ( any recommendations brands or 2nd hand oem from others cars ? ), shorter intercooler piping (with mandral bends) but larger in diameter on. And to put a pod filter directly onto the turbo. This way extra no stress is added tothe engine but just free up whats avaliable, what do you think ? and what gains would be able to be had ? also with these mods would a retune be nessaccary ?? i also toyed with the idea of an exhaust but i don't want it to be loud at all. Thanks regards Marty. EDIT: one more thing b4 i forget do you have to mod it to get the cool fluttering intercooler sound or is it like that stock ?? or so whats mods are required to get that sound ? i'm not talking about the BOV "psshht" sound. But the Brrrrmmm pow pow pow pow ( lol you know what i mean ). Edited February 9, 2009 by africanmarty Quote
Jono Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 fluttering is not 'intercooler' sound, its the sound of the air pressure formed by the turbo being pushed back against the compressor blades. yeah it sounds pretty cool, some people debate on whether this is all that bad for the turbo. the pipe work in these cars is horrible, so shortening it would be a good idea, although the diameter wouldn't have to be bigger if you aren't going to throw extra boost at the motor. i don't think you'll gain much and at 115kw from the factory you would want some decent gains for it to be worth buying. OniBerserker Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 you want a does pipe stolen from ff forum A does pipe is whats referred to as a straight piece of pipe off the front of a turbo, commonly used on vl turbo's, as most guys with vl turbo's relocate the air flow meter to into the intercooler pipework, so there's no restrictions in front of the turbo, and so when they 'does' it doesn't *** with the mixtures.. the tu tu tu sound is NOT made by external wastegates.. oldest myth in the book brought to you by people who don't understand dick about turbo motors.. Flutter is easily achieved by removing the blow off valve, or by adjusting the spring tension on the bov to not open under low boost... the noise is caused by the air being pushed back thru the compressor and being chopped up.. is claimed to be bad for the turbo, but thats debatable, each person has their own opinion on its dangers/whatnot.. and its a ricer mod ftl Quote
Jono Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 you don't need a 'does pipe', mine made the fully hektik flutter sound on my system before i added a blow off valve. on a MAP sensored car BOVs you can vent to atmosphere, with an AFM setup you will affect the fuelling due to the measured air being venting it to atmo. furryfrog Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 (edited) front mount + pod filter - bov = chop does pipes only sound good on a t3 most of the time. Oh and 'flutter' as you guys call it sounds nothing like a dosepipe Edited February 9, 2009 by furryfrog Quote
SoulSearcher Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 YAY! hopefully another sportivo on the forum!!!! definately get rid of the piping, but (from experience!) make sure the piping is the same size from the turbo to the start of the pipe (it saves with silicone hosing sizing) and then you can expand it to the pod, placement on mine is behind the escution plate (next to the fog lights) still working out the best way to get air to it effectively. Also, make sure you have a bracket to support the pipe and the pod. My BOV was making the fluttering sound, because the diaphram was split, so I replaced it I much prefer the pssshhhttt than the "zoidberg" flutter! Quote

Also soulsearcher do you have a pic of your engine bay for me to check out ? i'd love to see it. and how much did you pay for you i/c pipiing work ? you still have the oem cooler in it ?? Edit: lol "zoidberg flutter!" Edited February 15, 2009 by africanmarty Quote
orangeLJ Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 Flutter is for Vl turbos! only thing I can add other then that, is read into the problems some people on here have had with their sportivo turbos, the ECU one is a pretty good example of why you may be better off buying something else and going from there. SoulSearcher Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 ^^ not really, it's only 2% that we know of having a problem, and to chuck in a haltech is about $1800 (including turning) they are a fantastic car to drive  I do still have the oem FMIC on it, I don't really see the point of changing it. I don't have any recent pics of my engine bay, but when I get the car back from the painters, I'll take one for you. And "terminal's" sportivo is for sale, and he's letting it go WAY TOO CHEAP!! It's a bargain! :hmm: Quote
orangeLJ Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 I'm not sure, but is this bloke in Africa? his name is africanmarty? Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 I'm not sure, but is this bloke in Africa? his name is africanmarty? Considering the Sportivo Turbo was only ever sold in Australia, I doubt it. Quote
orangeLJ Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 I just put the broken-ish english with the name and assumed he was offshore. There is a AE112R sportivo turbo on carsales at the moment for 11k (IIRC) Quote
Sportivo_65 Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 So what did you decide 'africanmarty'...?? Quote
