Tume Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 Last year sometime I had a car accident where one of the front (mental blank as to what its called, holds strut and brace etc for car, has apron on it) fender? is kinked making it unable to be wheel aligned and also a write off. Until a little while ago I was thinking the only way to save most of the beloved car was to find a new chassis which is nearly impossible. Lately in threads where car accidents have happened, people seem to be saying to Put the car on a 'rack' where the kinked area will be pulled back out and straightened. What I am wanting to know is: Is it legal to do in SA? Is there a place to be able to do it in SA? What does it actually involve? Any info would be greatly appreciated cheers. Quote

KE30_KE35_KE55 Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 a car over 20 years old is not often put on the (WOVR) Written Off Vehicle Register, usually they are simply economical wright Offs. I think it can be repaired on a JIG first You need to inspect the inside for rust as in picture this will make the chassis rail weak. Quote
Tume Posted January 24, 2009 Author Report Posted January 24, 2009 Cheers for the info, yes I meant economical write off sorry should have mentioned that. Thank you both for the information looks like tomorrow after work I have some inspecting to do. Quote
SoulSearcher Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 oh! I was JUST talking to someone about this last week (in relation to our MR2 that was rear ended)....there's a place in ....oh crap!... I can't remember where but there's one here in Adelaide. I'll find out on Tuesday, or, if you speak to Corey at Prospect Tyres and More, he can tell you (he's the one that told my husband about it). Lesley :) Quote
Tume Posted January 24, 2009 Author Report Posted January 24, 2009 Cheers, I'm from the Barossa and not really ever out in Prospect to be able to ask. So if you could write up where it is when you can that would be greatly appreciated. Quote
kangaroosa Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 Might be worthwhile checking with local road authority as to the status of the car on their registry if your car has to be re-registered. I had a bloke crash into me a few years back and the insurance company declared it an economical write off (I bought it back and fixed it). I had to wait a few weeks to find out that VICROADS wasnt informed of the status of the car, hence it wasnt on the VIV (Vehicle Identity Validation) list. To get a car back on the road that has to go through a VIV inspection is very costly and time consuming. I think the allowable tolerance for repairs is within 3mm of factory standard. I thought it may be something that may or may not apply to your situation depending on your vehicles registration status and state regs. Quote

In SA Country a engine number check needs to be done at a police station, I think Metro needs to have the engine number inspection at Regency Park. Most good crash shops should have a chassis jig, you should be able to find one in your area. Quote
Tume Posted January 24, 2009 Author Report Posted January 24, 2009 Hasn't been registered since about August as that's when the rego ran out. Then again SA transport used to contact us every year or so if we hadn't registered it asking if we were going to continue to use it as if not, we had to make sure the plates didn't get taken by someone without their knowledge. This used to be our spare car as my dad's Ford over the years has shown to be a hassle in the most unfortunate places at the worst timing. Quote
Murd 55 Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 we did this the dodge way to fix up cars, involves metal chains and stoby poles. but seriously the jig is a much safer idea as the last car one of my friends did it too managed to rip the front end away from the firewall a little. Quote

lucifer d Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 I dropped past there this afternoon and had a chat to the boss. He was kind enough to spare his time and have a look at my car, giving a quick analysis. I believe I will be taking mine there for chassis repair. just out of interest how much would you be looking at chassis repair eg, straightening, pulling striaght and what not... Quote
