seabiscuit Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 (edited) This morning I had one of the most exciting and fun experiences in my Corolla... THE funnest actually. I went to a skid pan in the Sutton Forest (outskirts of Queanbeyan - near Canberra), where we hired a track and a defensive/racing training driver for 4 and-a-half hours. We had 15 minute sessions with 2 cars in a group of 8 cars on the track for each session to practice our technique while having the instructor in the car if you choose to, who gives us advice on how to improve. It was a great learning experience for me and a few of the others that came along to the day as we all had an insight into the motor racing sport of drifting. Plus, we had a ripper of a time. For those people who are beginners or are wanting to get into drifting, I strongly recommend skid pan days for you and your mates to go along to. Or, if you're a lonely bugger and have no friends that are into drifting or cars, every month (or few?) there is a public day for people to meet up and have a chat with the trainers and have a go on the skid pan. Booking is essential! I did mine with 5th Gear Motorsports. You can google it. Pics and maybe vid will be up soon! Good luck everybody! Seabiscuit Edited January 11, 2009 by seabiscuit Quote

seabiscuit Posted January 12, 2009 Author Report Posted January 12, 2009 (edited) Wish us Adeladians had somewhere that's willing to open its doors to the public, without charging an arm and a leg. It wasn't a complete race track or massive skid pan or test track like on the show Top Gear. It's no more than 40x40 metres. BUT, even with such a small track, we could get some pretty "hektyk" drifts going. Here is a couple of videos on the 5th-Gear Motorsports (Canberra) website. Skid Pan Video 1 Skid Pan Video 2 Like I said, you can see that the track is REALLY small, but you saw some of drifts you can pull off. You start with a BIG drift on the main corner, then you need to precisely aim into a smaller complex set of corners and then around the home straight hairpin and that's it.. About 25 seconds to do a lap. Still a huge amount of legal fun and excitement in your car. And remember, it's only for beginners or for a bit of legal fun. I'm waiting to get some pictures and videos of the day sent to me via email, so I can show off my first attempt at non-street drifting. ps. Would be a good gathering for Rollaclub members. If you book half a day for 10 or more people you get a free barbeque and professional quality DVD. That is, if there are more than 10 members in the Canberra region. :y: Edited January 12, 2009 by seabiscuit Quote

seabiscuit Posted January 12, 2009 Author Report Posted January 12, 2009 if another one comes up let me know cause ill drive from sydney to canberra for some skidpan action... and porn. The next public day is the 31st of January. I will not be attending this as I'll be in Bermagui hitting up the beachesand fishing spots! Anyone can go, but you must book. There is a limit to numbers, though. You don't need a drift-spec car. I did it in my stock as Ke70 and was able to keep up (drifting) with the sporty Skylines. I'll try my hardest to get something organised for us members! Good to see some interest. Post up here if you're willing to go. $110 + skid pan 'drift' training + free BBQ + pro quality DVD + chance for members to meet up, have a chat, show off their rides and learn how to drift. Perfect RollaClub meet. Quote
philbey Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 the Road Safety Centre on Oaklands Road has a Skidpan. Not sure of the accessibility of it though. I went to a drivers day at DECA in Shepparton, out of Melbourne in my sprinter years ago. I was having a ball, they wet the track down. This nice well spoken old dude wandered up and said "you seem to be enjoying yourself, would you mind If I come for a ride" So, I took him out, after plenty of drift and a few good spinouts, he was laughing his head off. Turns out when I asked what he drives, he had his E36 M3 there, and his other car was a 355 Ferrari! He took me for a lap in his M3, and promised to take me out in the 355 next time he had it there, but he passed away unfortunately. Just goes to show, you don't need 300k cars to have fun. Quote
bLinded_ Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 I'd be very interested in going to a meet depending on what date, as I am still waiting on my car to be tuned at the moment. I think that if more people express interest and you start working out dates, that'll be the best indication I have of whether or not I'll be ready. Definitely hope that I can make one as it looks like a good days fun :y: Quote
seabiscuit Posted January 12, 2009 Author Report Posted January 12, 2009 I'm organising a skid pan meet for mid-late February in another thread. I need to wait for the dates on the 5th-Gear Motorsport website to update themselves for a booking to become available and to find out what date/s are available as they only do 1 or 2 private bookings per month (it seems). We can either do a morning session from 8am - 12:30pm; or an afternoon session from 12:30pm - 5pm. Here is the link to the Skid Pan Day Thread Quote
godlovesugly Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 cheers mate ill have a look at the thread. $110 sounds like a good price to have some fun and keep my license. Quote

Anythings accessible with bolt cutters. This sounds like so much fun. Anyone got a block of land they don't mind having a 40m x 40m slab of concrete poured on? Quote
