K. Sev Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 had to change my thrust bearing today. took out all the bolts dropped the tail shaft out on the diff side dropped the box, changed the bearing, bolted it up. all went well without a hitch. bolted up the tail shaft and noticed that the shaft doesnt sit all the way into the back of the gearbox. there is about a half inch gap between dust cover on shaft and back of box where you can see the shiney part of shaft is this normal? it doesnt look right. technical points. ke70 flat front 5 speed gearbox i don't think its a factory 5 speed tho because half the belhousing bolts were missing, gearbox x member wasnt bolted up tight, reverse switch wasnt plugged in, shifter plat was bolted down with two of the four bolts, and the third bolt had been snapped into the thread, fourth was missing. any info would be really handy, cause i have no idea. cheers, Quote
KEI069 Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 If your car was still jacked up and the rear suspension was at full travel its all good. Jack the diff up to normal ride height and your tailshaft should move further into the gearbox. You need this travel so the tailshaft doesnt 'bottom out' into the back of the gearbox going over bumps when driving. Quote
K. Sev Posted December 30, 2008 Author Report Posted December 30, 2008 i knew id forget to write something.. the car was ramped up on front and jack stands under diff on rear. it was level when i did it Quote
love ke70 Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 there is usually a gap. it can't be hard up as it will bottom on bump and rebound. think back to when u pulled it apart, how much gap was there? how far is the shiny bit in the glory hole? if its in enough to not fall out, and you havnt changed anything, you can't be too far wrong really. K. Sev Posted December 31, 2008 Author Report Posted December 31, 2008 unfortunately i didnt take the time to look before i pulled it out. i didnt take the tail shaft out of the box, to keep oil in it. so i don't know how much is in. i havent changed anything its all back in its original place. are five speeds longer then four speds? are there different length five speeds (from different models) or different length tail shafts? thanks for replies, Quote
