seabiscuit Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 I've just picked up a KE70 for $400, which is going to be my paddock basher. The guy I bought it off had no idea what was in it, but was told that it has sports exhaust and suspension as it was to be turned into a race car before the guy he got it off moved overseas. I'm 99% sure it has the sports exhaust (complete with a holy muffler). There's some "supra" struts that were in the boot. He says it gave it negative camber and made it handle well, but again, he said he had no idea really. It also has had a bit of Nolathane put in it. I don't think it has had a whole-car treatment of Nolathane, but I know it has a couple things here and there. I'm just not sure on the suspension, as my friends rekon they're just cut springs. But do stock (early) KE70 springs come in bright red? The shocks are buggered for one, but the springs seem pretty stiff. My stock Ke70 springs aren't red, so I'm pretty excited if they are aftermarket ones as I'll put them in my daily. Also unsure of the rims, which have "JWL" stamped on them. Questions are: 1. Are they aftermarket springs? 2. What struts are they? Worth anything? 3. What rims are they? Worth anything? Here's a few pics. Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 (edited) JWL is just a Japanese standards authority. The wheels look like Mitsubishi Starion wheels to me. And if the springs are red, then most likely they are aftermarket (stock colour, if there was such a thing, would have faded long ago). And if they really are Supra stuts, then they'd have to be MA61 ones due to the 4-stud (could technically be MA45, but they're thin on the ground here). Doubt it though, most likely just RA60 Celica or the like. Edited December 29, 2008 by Hiro Protagonist Quote

Starion's are apparently rare as rocking horse shit in Australia! Haha, his turbo is about the size of a fist. Quote

Mate of mine at uni had one, lime green, with DOHC 4G63 turbo in it (they only has the SOHC ones standard). The widebody ones however are extremely rare in Australia... Quote

If thats the case then toowoomba must be the rocking horse poo Capital of australia cause there's at least two that i know of getting around town ;) Anyway, the wheels look pretty good on the car Quote
trav_555 Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 if they are celica struts don't they give more caster, not camber? Quote
toyota_ae71 Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 (edited) hey, its actually JIL not JWL as said above its japanese marketing symbol and they are deff starion rims (i think!) could be worth a bit to the right person , and springs deffinetely arent standard ones as the standard ones are alot smaller in diameter. Cheers Edited December 29, 2008 by toyota_ae71 Quote
Super Jamie Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 measure the diameter and thickness of the brake discs, compare to dba catalog, that probably will tell you what struts they are. mark from nz also has toyota strut measurements based on brakes, bolt hold spacing and steering arm measurements - www.toycrazy.net starion wheels, they look pretty good, and would be wider than stock steelies, and probably most celica/torago alloys you can find. nice score! starions are not really "common", but you can get them if you look, kinda like ke10s are red springs could be pedders, fulcrum or koni off the top of my head Quote
towe001 Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 if they are celica struts don't they give more caster, not camber? ;) No, not really. But it does depend on the angle and location of the king pin for the wheel. Generally no. What would affect the camber more would be the lower control arm, its length and where its mounted on the frame of the car. So in a way that, where its located on the frame could affect the caster, but really, no. The caster rod (or lca locator rod, or what ever its called) does affect the castor more then the strut. The closer the between of the wheel is to the front of the car, the more caster you have. The wheel will be more inclined to centre itself Quote
trav_555 Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 trying to rack my brain, i know i read somewhere that some people don't like celica struts as they give a weird caster?? and caster is camber when cornering right? cheers Travis Quote

Most likely to do with the kingpin angle and caster is camber when cornering right? Yes, may as well put it that way Whiteline Auto has a nice write up in their Tech Talk section http://www.whiteline.com.au/faqsusp01.htm Quote
trav_555 Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 cheers will give it a read for sure ;) Quote
7shades Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Starion (and Scorpion, for the record) alloys are 14x5.5... 30-something offset. Quote
