TRD ke70 Posted December 18, 2012 Author Report Posted December 18, 2012 well i didn't want to say anything.. But the idea was, if he ever wanted any more grunt, we could quite easierly fit a Beams engine into the car. But that could be a long way off. Quote
TRD ke70 Posted December 28, 2012 Author Report Posted December 28, 2012 The pass couple of days have been spent working on getting the gear shifter sorted for the 6 speed. Putting the gearbox back together proved to be entertaining to say the least. Very compilcated selector setup, but very nicely made. Happy to say it's getting close to been finished, just need to trial fit it to the car to set the position. We've also been working on the shocks and adding some extra bracing to the sill stands, it appears the sill isn't double skinned near the back wheels.Anyhow, they should be all finished tomorrow then all i need to do is paint the sills and look at making some kevlar sill protection. We had one shock together, all gassed up, but the seal failed and pissed oil and gas everywhere. turns out the seal that was supplied was the wrong one, have left the old seal with the supplier to see if they can find the right one. altezzaclub Posted December 28, 2012 Report Posted December 28, 2012 Armidale Rallysprint Feb 16th I believe..... :rolls: Quote
TRD ke70 Posted December 29, 2012 Author Report Posted December 29, 2012 Sorry Keith, i don't think she'll be ready for that. Gear shift is almost finished, just some final machining to the rear housing and shifter base and it's all good. Waiting for the gearbox mount to come from Toyota and i can finish the x member too. Now we need to change the gear knob to the correct 6 speed one. Gearbox can now come apart, ready for the close ratio kit to turn up. Quote
TRD ke70 Posted December 30, 2012 Author Report Posted December 30, 2012 (edited) Thanks Ian. Relocation of cross member mounts are almost done. Should get around to sealing and primering it tomorrow. Thank god, hard work grinding and welding upside down on your back!! Edited December 30, 2012 by TRD ke70 Quote
ke70dave Posted December 30, 2012 Report Posted December 30, 2012 looks good! stupid question, what sort of welder are you using on that sort of metal? Quote
TRD ke70 Posted December 30, 2012 Author Report Posted December 30, 2012 (edited) It's a little Brumby CIG mig with .6 wiring, but it's NOT gasless. I would have tigged it but it's just easier with the MIG under the car. Edited December 30, 2012 by TRD ke70 Quote
love ke70 Posted December 31, 2012 Report Posted December 31, 2012 why do you avoid gasless? just for the less spatter when welding on your back? Quote
TRD ke70 Posted December 31, 2012 Author Report Posted December 31, 2012 Cleaner weld with gas, alot less splatter, so less clean up too. But i don't mind gasless, it has it's use's. Good for welding outside or any place that is windy. Quote
TRD ke70 Posted January 1, 2013 Author Report Posted January 1, 2013 Just about ready to put some paint on the car again. All the gearbox x member mounts are done and primered. All holes have been welded up and sealed too. Found some damage from the last event, bent panhard rod. Not sure how that happened?? Quote
altezzaclub Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 That's the most likely place to bend under extreme compression. ..and I'd sooner bend the rod than tear the pin off the diff or the mount off the chassis! Quote
ke70dave Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 Gasless mig hey, perhaps i should get one of them for thin metal. My stick welder is awesome for thicker stuff, but man it makes a mess of thin stuff. Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 (edited) So does a gasless mig. Like the boys were saying above, a gasless mig has its place, its good for getting the job done in certain situations, but given 4 walls around you and available inert gas you'd be kinda silly not to do most things with a gas mig and use the gasless when the gas isn't getting you anywhere. TRD ke70 Posted January 2, 2013 Author Report Posted January 2, 2013 Matt and Dave Even a mig with gas and .6 wire, panel steel is still hard to weld. A Tig would be the best for panel steel, which we have as well, but we don't use it for panel steel. too hard to drag around. I'm getting lazy in the old age. Gasless are good for welding out doors, and you don't have the cost of a gas bottle either. They weld panel steel ok, but it's never going to be as good as a gas mig, maybe a little more clean up with a grinder as well. Keith I was surprised to see it bent, Tony didn't think he had hit anything hard. |blink| That was a jap panhard rod as well, they taper down at that end. Quote
