LukeAE71 Posted December 11, 2008 Report Posted December 11, 2008 Ok I have just bought lowered springs for my AE71, two inches all round. I am wanting to replace the shocks at the same time to save work. Apparently not many (or none) places make shocks for AE71. There must be another Toyota alternative. Does anyone know which ones I buy and if I have to modify anything what do I need to do?? PS. I do not wish to replace whole strut assemblies etc as I already have the springs etc. I bought them brand new so changing them over is not feasible. Quote
beerhead Posted December 11, 2008 Report Posted December 11, 2008 Yep, there's no decent shock absorbers that will fit in an AE71 strut, thats why most people opt for an AE86 or a corona strut which take the 50mm diam shocks, and give you heaps of selection. For the rear most run commodore wagon shocks. Just have a search through a few threads in the projects section, I bet you'll find what you need to know. Quote
Budowski Posted December 11, 2008 Report Posted December 11, 2008 No good shocks for E7 struts just use monroe gt gas. Or buy ae86 struts for a very wide selection. Quote
DearmanKE Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 for the rear ive usede both ra60 rear shocks and HQ rear shocks both monroe gas, and both were quite effective. shorter stroke to suit lowness and from heavier cars so are stiffer, havnt driven much on the HQ's but the old ra60 you pull it over the fence specials i ran in my old car were amazing lol Quote
dbr11k Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 hey all i own avery low 71 with 18s on it... there isnt much room left as you can imagine :yak: but i was wondering, are ae86 struts in some way "thinner" than the standard ae71's? Quote

Coilover springs use a smaller diameter spring which therefore have more clearance Quote
dbr11k Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 (edited) yes i was going to buy a set of decent coilovers anyways but i wasnt sure weather i could get away with just the 86 struts, so there is no difference? Edited January 18, 2009 by dbr11k Quote
D1doony Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 anything short stroke. if you can find them for your strut. Quote
Golberg Posted February 5, 2009 Report Posted February 5, 2009 A possible option for standard AE71 struts by way of a shorter stroke shock is VOLKSWAGEN - Golf (Series I & III), Convertible 79-93 Front VOLKSWAGEN - Golf (Series I), Hatchback 73-8/83 Front According to the Monroe catalogue they share the same body diameter but about 60mm shorter in stroke. Not the most ideal though as I doubt they'd be any/much stiffer than stock ones. Quote
