Ok, this has been bugging me for a while........

I know when people say they want to supercharge their K-motor/4A/whatever, they say they want either a SC12 or a SC14, what's the difference between the two and why are those the only two chosen? Surely there is something bigger/better/more efficient, so I'm just a little confused as to why only two models are ever mentioned........

Maybe everyone is just saving money buying used ones off old engines, maybe they genuinely are the best option....... :D

Someone please educate a confused soul........

SC12 = 1.2L or 1200cc of air per revolution

SC14 = 1.4L or 1400cc " " " " " "

People seem to use these two more because they are toyota superchargers and most people get rid of them from a factory SC engine and replace with a turbo

SC12 from 4AGZE

SC14 1GGZ (i think, i know its a 2L 6 cyl)

Wow, quick response.......*thanks SLO-030*

Hypothetically, what else could be used? What is "too big"? I have to ask as I can see a thread with a SC14 being put on a 4K, and I understand very little about how an engine does it's stuff, even less about how a super/turbo charger does it's thing........

I guess with an SC the size you go would be limited by the engine and the boost you want as it doesnt have boost lag like a turbo.

Basically an SC has two "rotors" with fins or lobes that intermesh with each other (much like gears) while spinning air is trapped between these fins or lobes and compressed before exiting under pressure (boost). All it really is, is an air compressor.

As long as you have enough power to turn the thing and mount/ plumb it i can't see any restrictions on how big you could go. There would be a point where it could be so big for the application that its stupid big. Some of the SC's used in drag racing soak up more power than the average HEMI V8 produces!!! Try that sucker on ya 4k :D

Ill take you for a run when i got mine up and going Ben.

As SLO said, there is bugger all lag.. when i drove my setup. it had a slight lag just after idle. but I'm putting that down to a slipping belt, and a rich tune. but F&^K me it pulls pretty hard for a shitty little K motor!!!..

If your keen on SC yours, i got a AC bracket, and i can help ya set it up.. PM me or MSN anyway!! :D

Most people run SC12s on 4As because 1) they came standard with them, and b) the SC14 doesn't bolt directly up. Go to another engine, and obviously neither will directly bolt up so you might as well go the bigger one. In general Toyota people use Toyota superchargers because they are easier to find within their community, are more in-keeping with the background of the vehicle, and are relatively cheap and simple. Roots blowers are about as basic (and crap) as superchargers get, but bang-for-your-buck they are pretty good. Obviously if you have the greens you step up to a twin-screw Lysholm/Whipple, or stick with a much better Roots like a Eaton TVS (what the TRD Aurion has)

There is also a pretty big price difference between the SC12/14 and and a "non-toyota" SC like an Eaton or Paxton.

Well lets let Ebay do the talking....

But at the end of the day this is also like comparing OEM turbos like a T25 or T28 off a silvia, to an aftermarket Garret turbo like a GT28RS!

Come round and have a chat about this turbo kit mate, there isn't as much work involved as what you might think!

Oh and you can have a look at my new Sierra I'm buying tomorrow!! :D
