When I am doing a job like that I lay all the parts out on a board in order of disassembly, that has worked well until we got an apprentice that likes to move things.

your correct. I was told without it on de-excelleration the gear will lock up due to the excessive movement without the clip. Its in and all sorted now. This topic can be closed, thanks all for your help.
