BDanger Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 (edited) So as most of you all can see by my join up date/ posts made etc i am more than quite new here. I recently bought a 79 ke55 sedan. Basically because i love older cars always have and when i took one look at this i was like yess! I don't know jack about cars, i know how to drive one thanks to living on many many acres out in wisemans ferry/st albans as a young kid, but apart from that i even had to read the bottle changing the radiator fluid the other day. Due to various court, police and train fines i've only managed (recently) to get my license (I'm 23) so cars in general, especially when it comes to motors and the like are very new to me. anyway enough of my life story here's my problem My car simply won't idle, it will run fine etc but when i take the foot off the accelerator it just dies on me, the person/friend i bought it from says its because it has twin webers and it won't idle because there's too much fuel being pumped into the engine..although i don't doubt that too much fuel being pumped into the engine is a problem surely there is a way around this without putting on single webers? (as my friend suggested) Anyway i have plenty more question so I'm going to use this thread to bring up things to you all and hopefully get some invaluable help in return. Here are some details on my car (although ill have to take some pictures of it all thoroughly to make sure this is all correct, just let me know what i should take pictures of haha) theres some surface rust and a quite a few dings but nothing really bad, well nothing worse than a shopping trolley could inflict basically Twin webers Flat Top Pistons Stage 4 Cam Oversized Crank 4K Head 5k Block 5spd Celica Gearbox Lowered king springs king shocks 2 1/2" Burkley Exhaust with Extractors sound 6x9 6" door 12" sub I paid 1700 for it and the car in question is the picture in my avatar did i get myself a decent deal, or did i get jibbed? I also wouldn't mind putting a couple of grand into it once i start saving some cash and pay for rego/green slip etc I love these type of cars and want mine looking nice :bash: One last thing while on the subject of green slips who have you all found to have the most decent prices in NSW? I'm hearing the Commonwealth Bank but surely there has to be somewhere better...I'm a poor bastard basically and would like to put my money into my car as opposed to filling up some already overflowing pockets thanks! beerhead Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 Hey, you paid a good price for a car with twin webbers and a celica box already in the mix. Near $1000 minimum for webers and tune. $300 worth of gearbox work too. Twin webbers won't be the drama for the idle, they can be setup to run on any motor. It'll either be a vacuum leak or poor jetting and/or choke sizes. Do you know if the previous owner had it running properly or tuned in the past? The idle isn't set to low is it? It sounds like it may just need a good tune up to get it running nice, but its very hard guessing. Quote
JiP Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 Hey, i agree with the vacuum leak. Same happened to mine. To stop it from stalling when driving just pull the choke out. It wont fix it but will help you with getting from a to b without looking like a tool cause you stalled. :bash: And i believe the term is jipped. Just think of my name. :( Quote
anastasios Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 yea sounds like a good deal, engine must go well, if i was you id take it to a carby specialist to take a look at it before you start fiddling with things, it depends what your budget is, don't go to a single weber Quote
DearmanKE Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 take some pics of the engine bay around the carbs and stuff, and post them up here, could be something obvious that someone might spot and welcome to rollaclub, sounds like you got a nice first car there 1700 is a good price for what it is :jamie: Quote
the_random_hero Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 Check for vacuum leaks to begin with, after that make sure you get your carbs tuned properly. Quote
BDanger Posted November 19, 2008 Author Report Posted November 19, 2008 thanks for the reply's everyone i had a look for vacuum leaks and there isn't any i also went and had a chat with a mechanic friend and he thinks i would be much better off getting rid of the twins and putting on a single weber as there is simply too much fuel being pumped in..I'm going to take it to a carby specialist next week and see what can be done before i resort to that i tried to get a camera to take some pictures but my sisters away with the digital so I'm going to have to wait for her to get back from holidays :jamie: ill post them as soon as i can Quote
BDanger Posted November 19, 2008 Author Report Posted November 19, 2008 also if anyone wants to help me with a wheels dilemma feel free to suss this thread http://www.rollaclub.com/board/?showtopic=25430 :jamie: Quote
beerhead Posted November 20, 2008 Report Posted November 20, 2008 Don't talk to mechanics about carbies, like you said make sure you talk to a tuner or a carby specialist. There's swags of K motors running great on twin webers in the club. He say's it's got too much fuel being pumped in and change the carby to fix it :jamie: Get it re-jetted, thats what they regulate. Also did you mechanic check your fuel pressure? How is the fuel system setup on the car? Twin webers are the bees knees of the carburetor, your mechanic needs to get up with the times (30 years ago). Have a search of the club, you'll find choke and jet sizes that other members have successfully had there car tuned with. Felix, medicine man and Teddy are some people that come to mind that have sweet setups on there K motors. I hope you get this running right, you have to keep the webers nothing sounds as good or lets a cam do there job as good. thanks for the reply's everyonei had a look for vacuum leaks and there isn't any i also went and had a chat with a mechanic friend and he thinks i would be much better off getting rid of the twins and putting on a single weber as there is simply too much fuel being pumped in..I'm going to take it to a carby specialist next week and see what can be done before i resort to that i tried to get a camera to take some pictures but my sisters away with the digital so I'm going to have to wait for her to get back from holidays :P ill post them as soon as i can Quote
leigh Posted November 20, 2008 Report Posted November 20, 2008 (edited) Doesn't a 4k head on a 5k block lower the compression ? Edit: Check this http://www.rollaclub.com/board/?showtopic=5058 Edited November 20, 2008 by leigh Quote
Taz_Rx Posted November 20, 2008 Report Posted November 20, 2008 Yes you're right leigh, but a 5k normally has dished pistons. Because he's got flat tops, compression would be about the same as a 4k. :P What ever you do (as has been said) don't take the side drafts off!!! :jamie: The motor sounds like it'd need a bit of fuel with the work its got done to it. Just take it to the carby speacialist and get him to re-jet and tune them for you and you'll be set. Does your gearbox look like the one on the left or the middle below? Quote
DearmanKE Posted November 20, 2008 Report Posted November 20, 2008 it should look like the one on the right if its a celica box? no? Quote
Taz_Rx Posted November 20, 2008 Report Posted November 20, 2008 Middle and right are both "celica boxes" - TA22 and RA40. Have a look at your bell housing ribs and tell us what you have. :) Quote
DearmanKE Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 ah yesh, would be damn cool if it has a w box Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 Middle and right are both "celica boxes" - TA22 and RA40. Have a look at your bell housing ribs and tell us what you have. :) Generally people refer to the W50 as the "Celica" box, usually because that is what is used for 5-on-the-floor conversions for old Holden straight sixes (many aftermarket bellhousings exist for this). W58s are usually called the "Supra" box for the same reason, although that sometimes covers R154s as well ("Supra Turbo" box) Quote
