ausca62 Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 Can somebody please explain the differance between a Silver and a Black top. I'm not up with new stuff, more into old, as in 2tg etc. But maybe its time to get into the now because i race against late model Honda's and Nissan's and quite frankly they are kicken my ass. Quote
swearze Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 there is not to much different in the two, but mainly it is a tuning difference with the black top coming out in front with more power Quote
DearmanKE Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 not 100 percent but i think the black top just has higher compression theres probs more than just that tho Quote

DearmanKE Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 map sensor instead of air flow sensor, larger throttle bodies, higher compression, more inlet cam lift larger exhuast ports Quote
Taz_Rx Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 Different cans of paint. is that like same shit, different bucket trev!? :bash: Quote
Trev Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 is that like same shit, different bucket trev!? :bash: Yeah basically. Nah seriously the guy to speak to about the differences that i know of is Matt (littleredspirit), He has had both engines in the same car. Quote
greenmac80 Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 as said above. also the rods and crank are lighter flywheel is also lighter. thats really about it. Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 Different cans of paint. The design of the cam cover is slightly different too, but from what I gather they are interchangeable (like bigport and smallport) Quote
Sam_Q Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 I have done my best to write a large part of the wikipedia entree on 4a engines so if anyone finds anything wrong please let me know. here is an article I wrote, i need to add some more of the minor things I have found since then: http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/faq/inde...4age/20vengines Quote
Sam_Q Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 (edited) oh and by the way if I am not mistaken the metalic grey "silvertop" is painted while the blacktop colour is a plastic pigment instead of paint. :bash: Edited November 11, 2008 by Sam_Q Quote
beerhead Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 They're very comparable in terms of power and specs on paper. But the blacktop and the gen II silvertop make thier power much smoother up top. You can tell the Gen1 and 2 motors apart from the linkage system that actuates the throttle bodies. Gen 1 has an extra lever in the system, whereas the later one is a single piece to link the throttle cable to the actuator. Cam timing is advanced slighly on the blacktop, but the best part about them is the light weight flywheel. Both motors don't run as well on our fuel without the use of an aftermarket ecu. Quote
