corolla_nut Posted November 8, 2008 Report Posted November 8, 2008 Unfortunately, after a good night out, I got home to see my baby on the other side of the road with the door open and lights on. Door lock is f@$ked, ignition is f@$ked, has dirt all down one side of it and a few dimples in the bonnet where there were none before... CD player, plates and CDs still there. They were obviously looking for money or something cause the glovebox had been gone through, the sun visors were down and the ashtray was open. As far as I can tell, the only thing gone is a pack of smokes, but I don't know for sure because we're waiting for them to dust the car as there are some very obvious hand marks from pushing the car. I'm assuming they got it going as the stereo was on and ignition was on when we found it. It seems as though they pushed it out the driveway, then started it and took it for a joy ride and were disturbed when they bought it back. It's a wonder no-one heard it as it has quite a loud exhaust.... Going to quiz the neighbours tomorrow. Rang the cops, took one look at the car could tell they weren't too concerned "that's the car?" I suppose there's not really much they can do anyway. Anyhoo, I was wondering what people thought about solex locks. I'm not really a fan of them, but it would be alot harder to damage them. Are there any aftermarket locks that are good, or should I just grab some second hand ones? Also, does anyone have any good ideas for an alarm type deterrent? Or should I just install a killswitch somewhere out of sight and unnoticeable so the car cannot be started without turning it off? Any opinions would be appreciated :y: Quote
JiP Posted November 8, 2008 Report Posted November 8, 2008 I got myself a Mongoose Alarm System. Best thing I ever did. Someone tried to steel it the week after I got it and it scared them off. This alram also has an immobiliser so even if you leave it unlocked, they can't start it. Sorry to hear about your car anyway. Thats the first thing I do to any of my cars before taking them out onto the streets now. Best thing I could spend money on. Quote
Jason KE30 Posted November 8, 2008 Report Posted November 8, 2008 wow dude that sucks. hope they find the mongrels. just wonderin... whats are solex locks?? Quote
JiP Posted November 8, 2008 Report Posted November 8, 2008 Solex Locks are a special key hole lock that replaces the standard one that the car came with. The Key is like they keys you find on a bike you lock. Its cylindrical and has small teeth. Apparently they are hard to pic. If you need some I have two here from the wagon I'm wrecking. Make me an offer and they are yours. I hate Solex Locks. Quote
KE ping it real Posted November 8, 2008 Report Posted November 8, 2008 That really sucks Kylie, the positive i guess is that you still have the car and as for a good security system, have you thought about a baseball bat Quote
JiP Posted November 8, 2008 Report Posted November 8, 2008 A good temporary fix is a club lock. I think you can pick them up for around $20 And this is what a Solex Lock looks like... Quote
coln72 Posted November 8, 2008 Report Posted November 8, 2008 Kill switch for the win. The old man used to make up his own alarms operated of the door switches. One had a bank of four fire sirens mounted in the boot. Shit that was loud. Quote
Budowski Posted November 8, 2008 Report Posted November 8, 2008 I found with the ke30's on any door (rear ones the bes)t all you need to do is lift the rubber seal from along the top of the door and get a long screw driver and just push down on the mechanism. In the car in less than 20 seconds. Id be putting some kinda cover over the mechanism on the inside of the door. Solex good idea, most corolla owners keys can start and open other corollas. Quote
corolla_nut Posted November 8, 2008 Author Report Posted November 8, 2008 Thanks for the help guys. I was thinking this morning that I'll just put a set of standard locks on there, I hate the look of solex locks and I figure if they really want to break into my car they'll find another way (i.e. break a window or use some packing tape). I'm thinking a killswitch sounds like a good idea as it wouldn't be too hard to install and I could quite easily hide it under the dash near the firewall. That really sucks Kylie, the positive i guess is that you still have the car and as for a good security system, have you thought about a baseball bat We have a boondy stick, an equivalent to a baseball bat. The only problem is that you need to be around when they're doing it to catch them and give them a beating! I'm working at a servo in town where a lot of those sort come in so I'm hoping that someone will have told people and it'll spread. From now on my little rollie stays on the inside part of the driveway. Preferably on the non-cemented driveway so it's harder to push! Quote
coln72 Posted November 8, 2008 Report Posted November 8, 2008 ......with a dirty great chain wrapped around the chassis and attached to the house........ :y: From now on my little rollie stays on the inside part of the driveway. Preferably on the non-cemented driveway so it's harder to push! Quote
philbey Posted November 9, 2008 Report Posted November 9, 2008 If someone wants to get into your car, the locks wont do much to keep them out. In an older car you could quite easily get a screwdriver in under the window frame and flex it out far enough to get an arm in and unlock the door. The old packing strap or coat hanger are easy too. I'm not even a car thief! The old killswitch to isolate the coil is a winner - car cranks but wont fire so they don't realise its there. Also if you run a fuel pump you could easily isolate that. Immobilisation is the way to go... Quote
philbey Posted November 9, 2008 Report Posted November 9, 2008 By the way Jip I'll take em for 20 bucks? Quote
luke.t. Posted November 9, 2008 Report Posted November 9, 2008 Hay mate sucks to here about your car........ on my Ke70 i got solex locks and a kill switch. putting a proper alarm in soon.... don't you think its kinda weird that they brang it back????? Quote
RedKE30 Posted November 9, 2008 Report Posted November 9, 2008 My KE30 has solex locks, they are shit. Someone tried to break into it before I bought the car, and broke of of the solex's. The keys break and get stuck in the locks. They're not worth it. Cheers, Sian Quote
corolla_nut Posted November 9, 2008 Author Report Posted November 9, 2008 don't you think its kinda weird that they brang it back????? Yeah, I thought that was weird too. We think they were distracted by my boyfriend's brother. He said he went outside and noticed the car over the other side of the car and assumed that I had moved it there. Apparently the lights weren't on and the door wasn't open then. We got home about 15mins to 30 mins later. Door open, lights on. Not too sure what to think? Quote
