Its Both. The capacity can't be changed by more than 15% in NSW, which is what everyone hears and thinks great, ae71 already has 1.6, ill go 4age. But the power increase has to be within the maximum allowed increase (unsure of the figure but may be 15% also).

But with this, some shops will let you change the engine number of an ae71 to the 4age number without engineering, just gotta pick where you take it.

I'm still failing to see anything about the power increase in writing though. I'm reading the "guidelines for vehicle modifications" article on the RTA website. Guidelines for Vehicle Modifications RTA NSW

I did hear the power increase information off a mechanic (my mates boss) who does LOTS of engine changes and modifications for drag cars and high performance street cars, mainly v8's.

But I'm going to keep researching this aswell, try to get some definate answers

Dragging it up again sorry, but I think I can add a bit more.

I scoured the RTA's documents for a while several months ago and found nothing about power increases... I mean sure it makes logical sense that there be a restriction like that, but if they don't state it, it usually means it doesn't exist. I guess maybe the inference is that can you really get THAT much more power with only a bolt in 15% capacity increase?? Evidently yes but there can't be that many cars where it works, in most instances it'll require custom mounts which imediately means engineering is necessary.

I looked at 3 different places to get my engine number changed, 2 said that only a blueslip was required, 1 said engineering was required. As far as I'm concerned if the engine number is on the papers and they've given it the OK stamp you're entirely legal. It is also obviously important that your insurance company knows what is going on.

I mean seriously whats going to really happen? You crash the car big time, injure some people, damage some property... then what? For some reason you're up for extra charges because you're engine has 100% more power than stock? Oh and who allowed you to do that? It was the RTA....

Well why not just engineer it? if you're like myself and also the person who started this thread you'll know that being on P plate's almost entirely = no fun with cars. If the bonnet of my car was lifted and a copper spied a nice big mod plate for an engine change I'm quite possibly up shit creek. I'm not an irresponsible driver, I just wanted a project car which I could learn on and attempt something as big as an engine conversion whilst I have plenty of time to do so. It would be pretty sad to go and build the thing then get to the end and not be able to drive it....

You've gotta love this too

"Vehicles – You must not drive any vehicle with:

* Modifications that increase engine performance."

Not once have the RTA actually given me a straight answer to what that means, although I have been told by them that swapping in a different engine doesn't come under this rule. The vagueness of the RTA and their loose rules is just pathetic for the size of the organisation. If for some reason I was ever pinged for something related to my driving a 4AGE AE71 I think I'd have reasonable grounds to take it to court.

Sorry, I get carried away when talking about the RTA, endless frustration.

i know it sucks aye, I'm like so what performance mods are we talking hear? surely you don't mean a cam, how do you know it has a cam? or higher comp, maybe it came out with extractors like that? so do you mean a pod filter? cause its boxed in and dosent do much anyway.....

yea rta sucks balls lol

4a-c to a 4a-fc

holden 202 carby motor swapped for a 202 efi motor, I'm pretty sure the 179, 186 share the same mounts etc

Ford 250 cross flow

Suzuki serria 1.3 single cam swapped for the swift gti twincam

Over the 15% increase and they don't need custom mounts

Not having a go or anything. Just find it interesting.

If they reckon you don't need a mod plate then excellent

Holden 202 carb and EFI engines are EXACTLY the same. only the intake setups change and block series much like the K engine EFI gear.

id have to come to a conclusion that its just if the block stock is bigger 15% bigger than original block in car, i mean i doubt they could get you for a 4age conversion in an ae71 with a 4ac stock as if you wanted too you could just fit the age head on the 4ac block, right?

so yeah

so i reckon you could easy get through this without engineering, you could probs use 4a engine mounts out af an ae71 right?

or you just say you did and make em look stock

but i eman are they gonna get you for making your 4k straight not on a lean, as that requires custom mounts

confusing is bru
