can anyone help me at all or recommend a company that will insure me.

I had my Corolla insured with Shannons from when I was about 21 y/old. Maybe their policy has changed since then? Have you tried calling them back at different times to see if you get onto a different operator that is more obliging? Even dropping into one of their offices may be more successful.

Worst case could be that you get the car insured through shannons, but in your parents name. Surely they wouldnt be that strict as to not let 18 y/olds be nominated drivers.

Just cars either didnt want my business or the operator was having a bad day when he quoted me a $1500 full comp premium for my (at the time) $1600 market value Corolla.

Shannons now insures it for $4000 with a $400 premium.

You probably already know, but Shannons only offer Full Comp or Third Party only. Fire and Theft are not on offer. Maybe has something to do with the higher risk of the insured cars being stolen due to their modified and valuable nature.

Have you tried this company? I have never dealt with them myself.

The only way the old man could get his FE Holden (std except for 7" chromies) insured was through an insurance broker. Cause of its age none of the major companies would touch it.

What mods are done to the car, and can you legally drive it on P-plates?

Are you the registered owner or your parents?

Give us some details: What's done to the car, why did they knock you back, what reason did they cite etc.

I insured an engineered CA18 Turbo Bluebird wagon with Vigil car insurance when I was about 20-21. Fire and Theft, about 800 bucks a year.

Just Cars have huge excesses, and their policies are quite inflexible. I insured my '78 911 with them because Shannons weren't convinced (when I was under 25) that I was a genuine Porsche fan, instead of a cashed up young bloke.

Shannons are looking at hardcore enthusiasts, not blokes that have tricked up their old jap banger. They will ask you some difficult questions before they insure you. As far as they're concerned, you are driving a common as muck corolla with a big engine, definitely not the market they're after.

CGU insured my Ke16 full comp for about 250 bucks. When I put the 911 onto Shannons after 1 year of Just Cars, I put the rolla on with them for about the same money, 250 bucks, covered for 5000!

I'll ask again, is the car rego's to you or your parents?

Just because it's engineered, doesn't mean they have to insure it. You, being 18 are at the highest risk point of your driving life, which already makes insurance companies cringe. The fact that you are trying to get around it by being a nominated driver may seem like a good idea ATM, but if it can be proven that you are the primary driver, the insurer doesn't have to pay up. Hence myquestion about who's name it's rego'd under.

It's essentially not the car they don't like (mostly), it's you. They consider an 18 YO in a modified vehicle too bigger risk to insure.

I have a PRC spec KE35 with all your mods and more, and it costs me $350 fully comp. I'm 36.

thanks for the help guys!

I filled out their online quote form and got a reply today.

They wont insure anything worth under $5000. So they basically didnt give me anymore info than that.

Agreed value may be the only way to get insurance through them.

As for GIO - I just spent 10mins on hold in a supposed que waiting to get a quote. Then I got disconnected. So i called back and smashed random keys on the number pad to get onto an operator.......who then told me that the quotes department is only open from 6am til 10pm. So myself and others (realistically) would have been waiting until 6am before an operator actually picked up. Maybe they have a good scam going with the phone company.

GIO have a vintage and veterans insurance policy that covers vehicles over 30 years of age.

My 1973 LJ torana is covered for $16,000 full comprohensive (I'm 20, had my licence suspended, 2 30km/h speeding fines etc etc)

and I only pay $340 a year. Registered and insured in my name since I was 17.

Insured for $10,000 when I was 17, fresh P plater, modified car and it only used to cost me $289 a year.

They are cool with modifications aslong as they are legal and you notify them.

I just called GIO for a quote under their Veterans and Vintage policy. 1975 Cars and Older.

My 1974 Corolla with 12A Rotary etc. (as long as its engineered and roadworthy)

Full Comp Insurance - Insured for $10,000

$450 Excess

$322.50 Premium

Full Comp Insurance - Insured for $15,000

$450 Excess

$350 Premium

The policy carries all the benefits of the regular full comp policies apparently.

I'll be reading the fine print. But it looks like Goodbye Shannons!!
