Ben-89 Posted September 7, 2010 Author Report Posted September 7, 2010 Ben i want your bonnet protector its amazing!! :rolls: Haha even I spun out when recieved it, as it was present :bash: and I've never seen one before! Headlight protectors can be bought off ebay for a buy it now price of $30.00 plus postage. And weather shields sell for about $60.00+ postage. I know I can find a cheaper shild elsewhere, its just a matter of waiting.... You should put a gennine tape deck in the lower console if you happen to see a csx at u pull it. I looked for ages and finally came across one, installation was easy as its all stock anyway and then with the ipod I had and the cassette adapter I just plug it into the ipod and pop the cassette it and it belts out the best of 80's music :laff: Quote
Ben-89 Posted September 11, 2010 Author Report Posted September 11, 2010 I went to pick a part today on the hunt for specific rear mudflaps and I was lucky enough to find a RH one, so now I'm still looking for another. I have been in contact with some members on here and ae86dc so hopefully a mudflap/s will surface. I couldnt help myself, an ae71 csx was being scrapped so I went through the interior to find another genuine tape deck. A grand total of $10.00 for this and the mudflap  :y: Very happy. I gave the tape deck a quick clean and plugged it up in the car and its a worker, so the neighbours heard a mix of Billy Idol, Tears For Fears, Frankie goes to Hollywood... Never hurts to have a spare! Quote
Ben-89 Posted September 12, 2010 Author Report Posted September 12, 2010 (edited) In exchange for a rear louvre I had Paul gave me a set of CS-X alloys. Complete with screw on centre caps and matching wheel nuts. The existing tyres on the ae71 are new so they will go onto these, but first I must do what I do best and thats giving them a thorough clean, rub down and polish.... Just a few before and after pics for you're entertainment. Before a scrub with solvol paste and a hand brush After I initially wanted to polish these to the point of the finish being like chrome, however with this design of wheel it will be much harder to do and will take up time that could be better spent on other tasks for the car. With various grades of sandpaper i'll stip back the clear coat to bring back the fresh alloy finish that was quite reflective anyway. It will still be a standout  Edited September 12, 2010 by "The Mint KE70" Quote
bAKER Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 Hey mate, I read this thread a while back when you decided to put the new exhaust on the 71, a lot of progress has been made since then! The cars look amazing well done. I wish I had this much attention to detail... Might need you to do mine! :P Are you going to restore the alloys? paint the centre caps and restore the rims, or try to leave them how they are? The colours are slightly different. Also, Did the 71 come with that interior? looks so clean... I can't seem to find one anywhere. Quote

Hey Baker, Yeah a bit of progress has been made, still need to do some small rust repairs and a manual conversion. Yeah attention to detail is paramount to me (or close enough) :) . The aim is to strip off all the old clear coat so the natural finish of the alloy is noticable. I might repaint the centre cap centres as two are more an orangey colour, and possibly the red border that embossed into the alloy I might do that too. Yes the ae71s came in that interior, come to think of it you don't see many. It was a bit grubby but with a good old school clean it came up a treat! The interior in you're ke70 is identical to whats in my white one, blue vinyl trim and door cards with no map pockets. If you're after a set of front cards with speaker holes let me know  Quote
Ben-89 Posted September 13, 2010 Author Report Posted September 13, 2010 Well this morning I spent a few hours cutting thorough that bloody clear coat. Despite using different grades of sandpapers and liquid solvol (as its abrasive) like a cutter its hard work. The result came out good however there are patches of clear coat I have missed. Is there an easier way of removing the coat, with a paint stripper- or will it damage the alloy. I was also thinking about those little flap disc sanders buying a few different grades and giving that a go. I would appreciate your advice. I put the wheel on temporarily for some tease pics. These arent water marks, thats the clear coat I mentioned. Quote
Evan G Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 jack up the rear wheels, put it in drive. and hold the sand paper on the wheel :y: those flapper discs on the die grinder might leave imperfections Quote
Ben-89 Posted September 13, 2010 Author Report Posted September 13, 2010 Hey Evan, I considered that as it would be pratical for doing the outer lip/dish part. But it may be tricky on the spokes. In regards to the imperfections though, I would still rub down the bare alloy with smooth wet and dry to remove the imperfections anyway. Cheers for the advice Evan :y: Quote
Undertaker_is_the_best Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 that is a piece of corolla art right there the cleanest and stock looking ae71 around you out do yourself everytime ben well done Quote
Ben-89 Posted September 13, 2010 Author Report Posted September 13, 2010 that is a piece of corolla art right there the cleanest and stock looking ae71 around you out do yourself everytime ben well done Thanks mate, its nearly getting there. I just can't wait to clean up the alloys  I'd be more than to give you're ke55 the same treatment if I could cheekily fit those MA61 onto my car *Jokes* If only we lived in the same state it would be cool  At the moment the car is quite dusty as its garaged, might give it a scrub this weekend to bring out the artistic elements. Ben-89 Posted September 13, 2010 Author Report Posted September 13, 2010 (edited) When I came home tonight I found this little beast parked in the garage, It was quite a suprise. 2007 Hyundai Getz, 3dr hatch, 5 speed manual 1.5, A/C pwr steering electric windows and a measily 44,000km on the clock. I took it for a drive with dad and its zippy and fun to drive and sticks to the road like a magnet. I was very impressed :) So this will recieve my attention for a little while as it needs a mild internal and external detail. The faceoff :P But as the saying in my house hold says, when one car comes one must go and yes its a Corolla :( Edited September 13, 2010 by "The Mint KE70" Quote
Ben-89 Posted September 14, 2010 Author Report Posted September 14, 2010 Some more progress pics of the detailing, photos and glaring sun don't do it justice. Wiped down all the windows with hot water and rag, then wiped down all interior plastics and fittings before giving it a quick vacuum and armourall. Washed the outside, chamois dried and then forever blacked all the black highlights and gave the tyres a bit of tyre shine. Quote

I love it! Have you tried letting the stripper soak into it? put some in a cloth and leave it on there and rub it off after a while. might be a bit risky Also, I might look into getting those door cards, when i have money again for a sound system haha. My priority is a new dash at the moment though. You don't know of anyone with spare Vinyl Blue interiors do you? EDIT: Getz looks brand new! I need to bribe you to do mine! Cheers. Haha the alloys do bring the car together, No I havent used the paint stripper yet but I thought I'd ask to see if anyone else has attempted it. Whenever you're ready for the door cards let me know, no stress :y: Yeah the Getz came up like a lolly, I put up better photos later in the week. P.M'd you in regards to the dash top  Quote
Paul Posted September 15, 2010 Report Posted September 15, 2010 I have tried paint stripper on my old celica rims a few years ago, don't bother. I resorted to sanding. Quote
