Falken_KE30 Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Just a quick one. There is a plug coming off the starter motor thats green and has 2 wires attached to it. Now I'm guessing this plug is to actually start the car with the key? one wire is Red, and the other one is Black with a white strip. the red one has broken off inside the loom somewhere and i can not find where it goes. Now I'm sure that the black one is Earth, and the red one is power for the key when its turned to "start" ? if so where can i attach this broken wire? obviously not to a continuous power source, nor one for accessories.. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Again.....its good you already know how a realy works. Starter motors have an internal relay. The big wire which should be the red one is infact a direct power from the battery, and always has power - for this reason its best to disconnect the battery befor working on a starter motor. The other smaller black/white wire is the "start" position trigger. There is no earth wire as the starter motor earths itself through the gearbox/engine block, but it doesn't hurt the have another earth strap somehwere in this area to the chassis. When you turn the key to "start", it triggers the SM's internal relay spinning the main motor, while also powering the solinoid to through out the gear. If the small black/white wire is broken disconnected then nothing at all will happen. If the big red wire is broken/disconnected you should still hear the click of the internal relay and solinoid, but the motor will not spin. Quote
Falken_KE30 Posted October 13, 2008 Author Report Posted October 13, 2008 Ok, So i have a Fat cable going from SM to + on the battery.. Then there is a 2 pin Plug coming from SM too, the red wire on this plug has broken.. So what your saying is, the Black wire on the plug is the SM "trigger" And the red wire on the plug is a constant power from battery? Quote
Taz_Rx Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Which car is this? ke30 or ke55? To tell the truth I've never had a corolla with 3 wires to the starter motor! Mazda only has 2 as well. Are you sure one of them isn't for the alternator? Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Ok, So i have a Fat cable going from SM to + on the battery.. So what your saying is, the Black wire on the plug is the SM "trigger" And the red wire on the plug is a constant power from battery? Starter motors have two parts remember, to put it simply the bit that activates the starter motor and the bit that actually turns the flywheel. So the big strap is the power feed for the beefy (it sucks quite a few amps) motor which actually spins drive pinion and hence the flywheel. The wires in the plug activate a solenoid which activates the plunger to move the drive pinion into contact with the flywheel. So two bits, two power feeds. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Ah, I for got about the power strap that goes from the main motor terminal to the solinoid. If your starter motor doesn't have this them the red one is probably another permanent power for the solinoid only! Quote
Falken_KE30 Posted October 13, 2008 Author Report Posted October 13, 2008 Ok Here goes... I don't have a camera so i can't take pic, but i did a crappy paint drawing. As you can see there is the main power cable from Starter to Battery + then the earth off the - side, Also coming from starter ( i know it comes from starter cause its inside that heatsheild stuff thats also on the main power cable from starter to battery) is a plug. Now you can see what the plug looks like in my crap drawing. what is this plug for? I'm guessing it starts the starter when you turn key? if not then WTF is it? its a 2 pin plug , Also made a mistake on drawing, the wires from starter to that plug are actually white, not the black and red shown there. Now the plug on the loom side of it that goes into that plug off the starter has a Black with white stripe, and a red wire going to it... the red wire on the LOOM has been cut, what its for? shurely its not constant power as i thought the main big cable was for that? Damn I'm confused, I'm going to go borrow a camera and take a pic... DOH  :D :) ;) Quote
Taz_Rx Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 I'm assuming this is all in your Bro's (Casey's) car not yours? Quote
Falken_KE30 Posted October 13, 2008 Author Report Posted October 13, 2008 No in mine... And ive figured it out anyway... I was certain there was only need for one wire to starter from ignition to start it. so why did i have a plug with 2 wires going into it from starter plus the power cable,.... 3 wires?? wtf. Main power cable from solenoid to battery, then there is one other wire that's to the ignition, the third wire i see turns out to be a single female bullet connector.. not hooked up to anything?? hrmmm lol.. Medicine_Man Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Black wire with white stripe should be the start signal wire, feed that 12v and it should do its thing.. Quote
