Gavclassic Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 Decided to get my mini out of storage and send it to the mechanic to check over it before i re registered it. When he checked the brakes this is what he found, he'd never seen anything like it before, the super aggressive race pads had worn the rotor down to the thickness of a saw blade and just as sharp on the edges. What made him more astonished is that he and i both drove the car before he pulled the wheels of and you could not notice a fault in the brakes. And yes those are cracks in the rotor! Quote
Taz_Rx Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 HOLY SHIT!!! what is the minimum thickness supposed to be!? Must be lucky the pistons didn't pop out!!!! You should put it on a record player too and see if it plays a nice tune!!! Quote
philbey Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 how did you not notice warping vibration through the pedal!!! Surely they must have warped? Phenomenal..... Quote
WinKE55 Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 All I can say is wow. That pretty much is amazing to me hah, never EVER seen anything like that. Be interesting if you kept driving and noticed you had no brakes and you saw you had no more rotor? Haha. Quote
78_7kRolla Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 Amazing. my dad is a mechanic for 30 years and he said that he has seen them very thin but nothing like that! Quote
Teddy Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 lol, i bet if you had of done a hard stop, it would of ended up being rather nasty ! Very insane, never seen something like it. Talk about getting value for money. Quote
Gavclassic Posted September 23, 2008 Author Report Posted September 23, 2008 I drove the car around for about 20kms before dropping it of to the mechanic which included a few hard stops, i felt nothing strange. The car was registered a couple of years back and nothing then either. The friend who got me the race pads uses them in his historic Nb mini race car, he said back then he use to only get 2 race meets out of a set of rotors. Now with new rotors and road pads the car doesn't stop as good as it did with the race pads and " Super Sharp Rotors ! " Quote
towe001 Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 Thats cause the pads had finely, and quite nicely i should add, bedded them selves in to the rotors Wouldn't have much problem with heat soak on the rotors either. There's nothing there for the heat to soak into...... Quote
silverra23 Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 I reckon you got your money's worth out of that one Gav! Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 -1 for routine maintenance +1 for value for money thats nuts. Quote
philbey Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 -15 for high chance of catastrophic failure resulting in painful death. Quote
78_7kRolla Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 (edited) What are you talking about? He still would of had the rear brakes working  Edited September 24, 2008 by 78_7kRolla Quote
SLO-030 Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 What are u guys talking bout. she's still got another 20,000km left on them:p maybe you could use them for pizza cutters or put them on a circular saw. Just be lucky they didn fail on ya. Quote
irokin Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 I wanna know exactly what the "super aggressive race pads" were so I can avoid them like the plague! I haven't even seen Ferodo DS3000 pads wear rotors that fast. I prefer to use more expensive pads that offer lower rotor wear. When you only have to replace $600+ rotors every 3-4 sets of pads vs 1-2 sets the extra $100-150 on the better pads pays off pretty quickly. Obviously not going to be anywhere near as bad (less expensive rotors) on a mini but something for others to consider if your rotors are reasonably expensive. Quote
Gavclassic Posted September 24, 2008 Author Report Posted September 24, 2008 Like i said earlier, in a mates race mini he gets 2 race meets out of a set of rotors, might sound like overkill but he's got the fastest Nb historic mini in Aus. Cost of replacement bits was reasonable, pair of new rotors, road pads, pair of front calliper kits, pair rear wheel cylinder kits and 2 rear brake hoses total $275 delivered. Quote
