Moses_33 Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 Hi everyone, I am very much a noobie to car's and know very little when it comes to tech talk. I have just recieved a KE55 1978 Coupe with the round lights and the square tail air vents. I am about to drop an R22 celica engine and 5 spd box into it but am concerened that the engine mounts may be too different. Can anyone shed some light on how different these are? Also would it be worth investing in a donor car for extra bits and pieces or just go down to the local wreckers and have a chat with them (not wanting to get ripped off thats all). Cheers Moses Quote
Redwarf Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 Can you say the word "custom"? I doubt very much whether anything is going to bolt in here. I could be proven wrong, but you're going to be up for custom mounts, hydraulic clutch conversion, and probably custom gearbox crossmember. It wont "drop in". Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 (edited) Out of curiosity (not that I'm bagging your idea, just making sure that you've thought it through), why are you going with a 22R? They're a BIG, HEAVY motor that makes rather poor power for their size (rather poor power overall, actually), and the R-series has never come out in any Corolla so any gearbox and engine mounting stuff is going to have to be completely custom. Also, the standard gearbox behind a 22R is either a W- or G-series, both of which will most likely require "massaging" (ie bashing) of the transmission tunnel to make it fit, and then you'll still need a stronger rear end to cope with the torque. 4AGEs and 2TGs are much more common conversions which don't require completely custom installs, and if you do go down a completely custom route then something like a CA18 or SR20 will give much better results than a 22R (more expensive though) If you're just after a cheap power upgrade (the 22R itself is pretty cheap), it may be better going with something like a 5K or 7K, and if you've got any money left over from your original budget then spend that on cams, exhaust and carby, and you'll be much happier with the results. Moses_33 Posted September 16, 2008 Author Report Posted September 16, 2008 Thanks heaps for those answers. Went the 22R as my brother in-law suggested that it would go hard. and he had a mate that has one with box and everything. As I know virtually nothing and was given the car and motor for practically nothing (car nothing engine and g/box $500) I went kinda no worries. she will be right kinda attitude. Maybe shoulda tried to source some rolla experts before I made the purchase of the motor and box!! oh well lessons we learn. Moses33 Quote
