hey,

I am planning an engine conversion in my ke55 and i need to do a brake upgrade to get an engineering cert. I have been considering two options: putting volvo calipers on a hilux disk(i think its hilux) or putting hilux calipers on peugeot disks. does any 1 have any advice on the easiest/cheapest/practical upgrade? thanks.

Firstly, which state are you in, as it varies between states. I have TA22 struts and brakes on mine, and it passed engineering fine, although we are upgrading to Magna rotors and VT V8 4 spots.

Have never heard of Volvo calipers over Hilux discs (have heard similar for back brakes though), I have Landcruiser (like Hilux) calipers over peugeot discs on my car. It's not a hard conversion to do, just require a bit of machining work to get stuff to bolt together.

hey,

I think that is the conversion that i'll do (peugeot disk/hilux calipers) but i brought some custom suspension which suppossively have hilux disks on them. the guy i brought them off said that he was using carona calipers (i think) but no one seems to no about this conversion so I'm not sure :D

Thought I'd dig this one up guys, I'm just looking at brake upgrades on my KE55 (which I'm yet to register.. I know, I'm just buying parts and I'll throw everything on at once! Make a big show out of it!) I'm VERY new to doing a brake upgrade, so I was looking at maybe VT Commonwhore V8 rotors/calipers on the front and HQ drums on the rear OR Mazda RX7 S4 front brakes and possibly a rear disc conversion. I know it's mega buck, but I wouldn't have asked if I wasn't gonna pay for it, true?

Fook/Red... your brake setup on your car now, how have they gone with the hiding you guys give your cars and have you done any upgrades as of yet?

(Installs sponge into brain for replies on this one) :P

hey tiger, I'm no expert, god knows ive asked a few questions myself on 55 brakes but i don't think id go dunnydoor brakes, the hub/disc is one unit so your stud patern is expencive to change, if you leave the 5 stud it will be hell to find a wheel small enough to fit

(there are bearings av. to stick holden hubs to toyota so thats an easy)

other thing, why go so big? sure if your planning to race bathurst and need to loose the heat but seems overkill otherwise

if your in no rush, I'm giving up on the corona upgrade and looking at skyline/wrx 4 spots (yes they are the same) after market vented discs, and a disc rear, one day if it works it can all go in the FAQ

Well, performance upgrade is on my list, so I'm the kind of person that would like to do the job right the first time. Suspension, diff, brakes, body, interior, all getting done once and that's it. Stereo and motor... well... that's another story! :P But yeah, I've got the engine in mind and it's capable of decent output (like 200rwbhp) so I'm wanting to make sure it stops.

I'm just throwing up options here.

So what's the specs on the Corona upgrade?

just finished a 200+ hp datto 1200 coupe, tore the rear rail in half first launch! haha its all fun when I'm not footing the bill!

i havent sat down with all the books yet so specs are still sketchy on all the what fits what into my rolla

Need to keep an eye on this. My car will need a brake upgrade soon.

We were thinking of doing the diff as well and heard that a skyline diff would go nicely and that way we could gear rear discs. For the front we were thinking of putting in a corona front end (our mechanic has a rally KE55 coupe with a corona front end that he might be scrapping).

Tiger the pug/hilux/corona upgrade is quite good and will pull you up quite nicely. Everyone on Toymods who use that combo praises it

IDB in melbourne can supply pug disks mazda twin or four spot cailpers, corona legs, sigma control arms and springs and shorted shocks for around $1600 i think when i rang him.

I m going to see a fella tomorrow he runs 300zx disc and cailpers on a ke35 and reckons he can do the lot including springs etc for $1000 so i ll let everyone know tomoorow

**yet to speak to the fella bout the 300 brakes but will post when i do

The main issue people seem to have with the Hilux calipers is their weight. Aside from that there doesn't seem to be any issues as you can use RX7 pads in them to improve braking further if you wish.

I'm trying to get more info on the RX7 calipers as I don't know if they can bolt on or if an adaptor plate needs to be made up. Volvo calipers don't really interest me as I think they're only twin-spots.

As for rear brakes, I am (eventually) going to go for a Corona Avante diff, which comes with a disc setup. I presume that this setup could be upgraded by using the front calipers from the Corona on the rear, but am not certain (yet). I'd also be interested in investigating the rear discs from the S4/5 RX7 Turbo.

just seen the fella bout 300zx brakes he has a ke55 track car looks sick has 6 degrees neg camber so tough lol.

Anyway wont do them for a street car as doesnt want any liabilty issues. But he told me he runs corona struts with skyline discs gts-t 4 spots and a litace van diff with Front wheel drive offsets (no shortning needed).

Also said a tp magna disc will fit has the same pcd just needs flange with wheels studs machined down a bit and 14" wheels and commodore cailper with adapter plate

About the mazda calipers ring idb in melbourne and he was really helpfull would be able to tell you what you need to know i would be 95% sure adapter plate will be needed though!
