Not sure if anyone has spoken about this but I have been curious about E10 for a while now. I've heard that it can only be used with some engines. Can it be used with K engines??

Usually servo's only have the E10 Regular Unleaded Petrol, but this morning I pulled into a servo that only had E10 fuels and since I only use 98 I tried their 98 E10. I was stoked at the 137 price tag too.

Can anyone shed some light and opinions??

thanks,

J.

I get about 4 full tanks a month.

I use E10 as one of them. Ethanol in the fuel will stick to water/ moisture in your fuel system and then take it through the engine and out so I use it to rid of moisture.

What can happen is ethanol will send some rubbers soft and they break up causing fuel leaks. Old/er cars have that rubber. I am not 100% sure about a K motor but I have run 1 tank full of it a month for 8 months this year now and no issues yet. Nothing rubber wise.

But note you get slightly less economy out of E10 fuel.

Cheers

The main reason you shouldn't run ethanol fuel in a K motor is that the plastic float for the needle and seat isn't ethanol safe. Given half a decade it'll perish :no2: But it'll take a while, and the fuel savings will probably offset the cost of the carby from the wreckers too.

BTW

When they mod carby's for methanol they remove all the plastic floats and braze custom brass ones on. There's a different spec of rubber they use for the lines too, but I don't think that'll be much of a drama for E10 mix.

is this same as ULP?

Cause where i live its $1.53 a Litre compared to $1.58 for unleaded, and $1.64 for premium.

Mum ran ULP which I'm sure is ethanol based, and after 2 full tanks in her falcon it shit the fuel pump, car got less kays to tank, and ran hot and sluggish... before the 2 tanks though she ran unleaded and it ran great, (for a Falcon lol)

the thing i hate about this E10 stufff.....is that the petrol stations advertise it on the billboards, and i forget...and get to the browser and normal fuel is 10C MORE!!! :no2:

i tried E10 fuel in my 4k ke70 once, i did it by mistake, just put in 10$ worth since i already stated filling before i realised...

for some reason it just ran terribly....was very difficult to start in the mornings (10$ lasts me almost a week, i don't drive much) and would splutter and carry on at low throttle.

i ended up just going to servo and putting in 10$ of BP ultimate, i figured E10 pluss some ultimate should equal about same as normal fuel

instantly it ran better, so i dunno..maybe i just got a bad batch of E10....

having said that i haven't ever put it in again, so maybe i just got unlucky, but ive always been wary of additives in fuel...but then again you never really know the quality of ANY fuel anyway....

i used E10 from united once and got about 350km to the tank when i normally get 550km so i though screw that idea

i find shell ULP last the longest

but i don't put premo or ultimate in it

Yeah, well I'm sure I'll never stick that crap in my car again. 1 and a half days and over half a tank gone. And thats just to and from work. Massive drop in power too, its like the car is full of people.

95 ron E10 burns pretty slow, you should have your timing set from about 15 - 20 btc and the economy will still be there. In my 5S camry I get 8L /100 on the E10, and I don't exactly put around.

ULP stands for UnLeaded Petrol, so they've probably called it E10 ULP on the bowser to save on sticker money :sob:

Guys,

E10 is all well and good, but there's a few things you need to consider to get benefits out of it:

- AFR needs to be different, you need to run more fuel in the mix, you might be seeing less power because you're a tad lean

- Ignition timing needs to be considered like beerhead said

- Compression - Ethanol is increases your RON. If you build a motor for Ethanol, you'll be able to run higher compression ratio than straight petrol. Compression ratio = efficiency = more grunt!

As for the water issue, cam is spot on, the ethanol attracts water, which is why it's no good to let it sit for a while.

Rubbers these days should be fine, aim for Viton rubber and you will be fine. Cork gaskets in fuel pumps and carbies are also eaten by ethanol.

I'm building my 5k at the moment, and over time, I'm going to start getting the gear to build it to run a proper E85 ethanol tune - ignition curve control, wideband 02 to tune with etc. Just need to source good cheap ethanol to blend my own!

I stuck some vpower racing in the twinky on the xmas cruise and noticed a difference, Apparently the E85 has been tested on alot of race cars and have seen power gains of up to 20hp and as it has been stated you will have to adjust your ignition timing, They run something like 20-30 degrees static timing.

i use 98 ethonal, i have it "tuned" for it and i definitely get more power from it. highway economy is incredible but city driving is down... but that maybe due to other factors as well. had to screw more fuel in it than what i had on 95 (PULP)

this is with a lightly modded 4ac
