brendan Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 (edited) hey i was just wondering whats the highest anyone has seen a 5k rev too Edited August 26, 2008 by brendan Quote
beerhead Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 I've heard TRD KE70's rally car used to hit 10,000rpm, but suffered reliability issues till they fitted a rev limiter to it. Top end cam's aren't really much use on the street though. Quote
brendan Posted August 26, 2008 Author Report Posted August 26, 2008 ahk thanks mate well i have just finished building mine and just curius on what it would rev too i have flat top pistons polished & ported head bigger valves and springs and twin sidedrafts woud you have a clue judging off that what it would rev too? Xany Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 all depends on the build quality of the engine, has it been balanced? solid or hydro lifters? Thats my 5k....specs are in my sig. The actual needle is the top one, Teddy will vouch for seeing the tacho needle hit the shift light. Quote
beerhead Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 Sounds like a nice 5K. What cam grind did you get? Have a look at programmable ignition kits from jaycar or a MSD. The 5K elec dizzy doesn't have enough timing advance even on a stock motor, re-curving a dizzy is a waste of money in my opinion, esp when its so easy to go computer controlled these days. Quote
coln72 Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 My old 5k would pull 8000ish with out an issue. Would see the shift light constantly on when it was set to 7500rpm. Quote

johnny t Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 (edited) if it means anything my old supercharged 4k used to rev to 8500rpm all day everyday. i had big cam, port polish, double vaulve springs, bored 60 thou, extractors loved it :no2: johnnyt Edited August 26, 2008 by johnny t Quote
brendan Posted August 27, 2008 Author Report Posted August 27, 2008 i jus took it for the first drive and i am very disapionted in the performance but not forgetting its running the standard intake and outlet manifold with the stock carb ...when i put twin sidedrafts will it make alot of difference? it feels like I'm draving a standard 5k :sob: Quote
beerhead Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 You'll definitely need extractors too mate, with a big cam and sidedrafts the factory manifolds aren't going to flow enough, and be the bottle neck of the system. What cam profile you got mate, if its standard, it'll drive the same as any 5K, no top end at all. i jus took it for the first drive and i am very disapionted in the performance but not forgetting its running the standard intake and outlet manifold with the stock carb ...when i put twin sidedrafts will it make alot of difference? it feels like I'm draving a standard 5k :sob: Quote
Redwarf Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 (edited) What has actualy been done to the engine? Cam been done as well? Specs for cam? Over bore? Twin sides will make a difference. Don't expect fuel economy though. Extractors should be high on your list of purchases, too. Edited August 27, 2008 by Redwarf snap! Quote
brendan Posted August 27, 2008 Author Report Posted August 27, 2008 (edited) 1mm overbore flat tops ...port & polish head biggervalve springs not sure on cam size havnt got the paperwork bak for the motor dizzy is still the standard and has been fully balanced the comp is up around 11.1 Edited August 27, 2008 by brendan Quote
beerhead Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 If you're not sure on the cam then, does the motor have burble? The noise when there is a fair bit of overlap between the inlet and exhaust valve, making a tough sounding idle. Big cam's (300 duration) make a K motor sound like a rotary. Is the dizzy electronic? Or points? Is the vacuum advance working? Programmable ignition ftw though, worth every cent. As the dwarf said, first thing on your list should be extractors. 1mm overbore flat tops ...port & polish head biggervalve springsnot sure on cam size havnt got the paperwork bak for the motor dizzy is still the standard and has been fully balanced the comp is up around 11.1 Quote
Redwarf Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 You're going to have to run that thing on PULP. Nothing you have told me there makes me really open my eyes, except to say that it's probably a good rebuild. 11:1 is a bit high for a street motor (IMHO). However, you are not going to see any benifit unless you sort out the induction and exhaust issues. Quote
